A presentation was held yesterday afternoon and the first Historic Home Plaque was unveiled at 85 Joseph Street in Port Carling.

This is a program developed by the Township of Muskoka Lakes Heritage Committee and the Muskoka Lakes Museum, spearheaded by Susan Daglish, longtime Port Carling resident. In attendance were members of Muskoka Lakes Township Council, Architectural Conservancy of Ontario, Muskoka Chapter as well as Mayor Phil Harding.

The plaques are made of street sign quality material and will withstand the weather. They bear three pieces of information: the date built, the name of the first occupant and the occupant’s occupation. The plaques are designed to be mounted on the home itself and will be visible from the sidewalk.

Other homes that had been identified in the preliminary step of this project had their plaques handed out for the owners to mount at Thursday’s presentation.

“This will be a great way to share local history in a simple way for all residents and visitors to the area to see,” says Courtney Provan, Director of Muskoka Lakes Museum. “Hopefully the program will expand to find homes in many communities throughout the Township.”

To inquire about the Historic Home Plaque project, contact the Museum at 705-765-5367 or email at info@mlmuseum.com.

The Muskoka Lakes Museum has begun a three-year search for historic homes in the Township of Muskoka Lakes.

“The hunt for homes built before 1935 in our Township has begun well,” said the project’s leader Susan Daglish. “We have successfully completed the first phase in Port Carling and have identified 10 homes which meet our criteria. The Township has a rich history, and it is exciting to share and acknowledge its beginnings”

Courtney Provan, the Museum Director added, “If you live in the Township and your home was built before 1935, your home may be a candidate for our Plaque Project. If you think your house qualifies, contact me at the Museum.”

The first plaque will be presented at 85 Joseph Street, Port Carling, August 19 at 4:30 p.m. The Township Council, Heritage Committee, Muskoka Lakes Museum Board, Architectural Conservancy of Ontario and the other plaque recipients are invited.

The plaques are made of street sign quality material and will withstand the weather. They bear three pieces of information: the date built, the name of the first occupant and the occupant’s occupation. The plaques are designed to be mounted on the home itself with two rust-proof screws and will be visible from the sidewalk.

Provan explains that the Museum receives many enquires from people tracing their ancestors and the verification of where the early settlers lived and worked will help these seekers. The information gathered will also be made available to the Muskoka Lakes Library.

The Muskoka Lakes Township and the Township’s Heritage/Affordable Housing Committee are supporting this endeavour. Phase two of the project will see plaques in all communities within the township.

To inquire about the project, contact the Museum call at 705-765-5367 or email at

In late 2020, Muskoka Lakes Museum learned that it had received a six-month, $50,000 Resilient Communities Fund grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) to study and create a strategic plan that would contribute to the development of a memorable and unique visitor experience. The project was completed in June and will ensure the museum’s long-term viability as a key asset in the District of Muskoka heritage and tourism attractions.

“Many organizations have had to take a step back and reassess how they provide services and interact with our communities over the past couple of years,” said MPP Norman Miller. “I am happy to see the Ontario Trillium Foundation support the Muskoka Lakes Museum as they investigate virtual programming to further preserve and share our local history. This approach will expand the reach of the Muskoka Lakes Museum and allow for people well beyond our residents and visitors to learn about the rich history of the Muskoka Lakes region.”

The Resilient Communities Fund was developed to help non-profit organizations recover and rebuild from the impacts of COVID-19 to continue meeting the needs of Ontario communities. The museum engaged TCI Management Consultants, museum strategy planning experts, and Reich+Petch, museum architects and exhibit designers. They were tasked with exploring all facets of the museum including, but not limited to, what is collected and why; the exhibits and how to present Muskoka’s important stories to the public; the programs and activities offered; how to be more diverse and welcoming; and the configuration and layout of the space.

“The impact of this Ontario Trillium Foundation grant on the future of the museum cannot be underestimated,” said Tom Diamond, chair of the Muskoka Lakes Museum Board of Directors. “This grant has allowed for a much-needed strategic look at the museum and how to better serve our visitors while maintaining and growing our collections.”

As a result of the findings of the strategic study, the museum will see a renewed focus on telling the stories about the lives and development that made the area what it is today. Improved Visitor Flow, expanding galleries and displays, and operating at the highest standards expected of museums, this study will see the museum renewed and resilient post-COVID. And thanks to the $50,000 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, visitors to the museum will have an opportunity to learn more about the region and the history of boat building in the region.

The Muskoka Lakes Museum is committed to collecting, documenting, and preserving the collection and ensuring that it remains accessible for as many visitors as possible. To enquire about visiting the museum, or to learn more, visit the museum’s website.
