The Ontario government is safeguarding fish populations in Lake Simcoe by ensuring individuals follow the legal catch and retain limits.

Tyler Nicholas of Midland, Michigan pleaded guilty to catching and retaining 22 yellow perch over the legal limit. He was fined $2,000 and is prohibited from obtaining a fishing licence or engaging in any fishing-related activities in Ontario for two years. In addition, all fishing equipment used is being forfeited to the Crown.

The court heard that on February 11, 2025, a conservation officer encountered Nicholas while ice fishing on Lake Simcoe near the town of Beaverton. An inspection revealed that Nicholas had caught and retained 72 yellow perch that day, 22 more than the daily sport fishing licence quota of 50.

Justice of the Peace Richard R. Therrien heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Whitby, on April 2, 2025.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) is asking the for the public’s help with identifying the individuals responsible for unlawfully leaving their fishing hut on the southern portion of Cook’s Bay, Lake Simcoe.

On March 6th, 2024, Conservation Officers were operating a Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) over the southern portion of Cook’s Bay on Lake Simcoe. The RPAS flights were conducted to determine if any ice huts had been left abandoned on the ice. An ice hut was located partially submerged in the water on the edge of the ice pack. The hut was primarily constructed of wood and plywood and had a blue tarp roof. No registration numbers were located on the hut and it is believed that it was purposely abandoned on the melting ice.

If you have any information that will assist Conservation officers in their investigation, please call the ministry TIPS line toll free at 1-877-847-7667 or contact your local ministry office. You can also call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS.

As a reminder to anglers, all ice huts must be removed before ice breakup, even if no removal date applies. Conservation Officers are strongly recommending that all ice hut owners develop and action their ice hut removal plans before the ice conditions deteriorate to prevent situations like this from occurring. If early ice out is not a factor, ice hut removal is location dependent, with regulated removal dates ranging between March 1 and March 30.

As spring is approaching and daily temperatures begin to rise, members of the York Regional Police Marine Unit are reminding residents to stay safe on Lake Simcoe and surrounding bodies of water as the ice conditions are changing rapidly.

Ice fishing enthusiasts are reminded that all fishing huts must be removed from Lake Simcoe by midnight on Wednesday, March 15, 2023.

Each year, members of the Marine Unit respond to calls of people, vehicles and pets that have fallen through the ice. Citizens are reminded to keep pets and children away from all ice surfaces during these times where the ice is melting.

Officers have already spotted open areas in the ice, near the mouths of rivers and where there is moving water. The thickness of the ice on Lake Simcoe can vary based on currents below the surface and temperatures above. Uneven cracks can quickly form, resulting in hazardous obstacles for snowmobilers. Check with your local ice hut operators for information in the latest ice conditions.

Remember: No surface of ice or body of water is ever completely safe. It is crucial that citizens take individual responsibility in evaluating the dangers of any recreational activity. If you make educated choices regarding safety, accidents can be prevented.

Following these safety tips can help keep you safe:

Know the condition of the ice before you go out and remember that changes in the weather can rapidly alter conditions on lakes and streams

Wear proper clothing and floatation attire

Never venture out onto the lake alone

Ensure you have a cell phone with a fully-charged battery in the event of an emergency

Tell someone where you are going, with whom and what time you will return

Every year, garbage and other materials that are left behind on the ice in the winter are not only pollution, but can be hazards for swimmers and boaters in the spring and summer. Respect the environment and the waterway that you so enjoy. If you took it out on the ice, then take it back on land before the ice melts.

For more information and safety tips, contact the York Regional Police Marine Unit at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 7321.

Members of the York Regional Police Marine Unit are reminding residents that ice conditions on Lake Simcoe and other lakes and waterways remain unsafe and unpredictable during early season ice formation.

Lake Simcoe and surrounding waterways still have large sections of open water. As new ice continues to form, it can be relatively thin. While sections of ice may appear to be snow covered and stable, we would like to remind all citizens that ice conditions can vary drastically even in close proximity and may pose significant risk.

Each year members of the Marine Unit respond to calls of people, vehicles and pets that have fallen through the ice. Citizens are reminded to keep pets and children away from shorelines, river banks and ponds as ice and increasing water flows present a clear danger.

Remember no ice is ever completely safe. Any individual enjoying recreational activities near a body of water must make a personal decision to do so, realizing that there is a degree of risk associated with this choice. It is crucial that citizens take individual responsibility in evaluating the quality of ice.

For more information and safety tips, contact the York Regional Police Marine Unit at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 7321, or visit the York Regional Police website at www.yrp.ca
