$7,270,000 investment will improve visitor experience and boost local tourism

The Ontario government is investing $7,270,000 to build, maintain and revitalize infrastructure at Killbear and Oastler Lake Provincial Parks. This investment will improve the visitor experience and boost local tourism.

“Parry Sound-Muskoka is home to some of Ontario’s most beautiful and frequently visited provincial parks,” said Graydon Smith, MPP Parry Sound-Muskoka. “Our government appreciates how vital it is to ensure our parks have the amenities and infrastructure required to provide a high-quality visitor experience. This helps keep our parks sought-after destinations, which in-turn contributes much to our local economy.”

Oastler Lake Provincial Park is receiving $5,500,000. These funds will be used to renew the administration building, along with a bridge and the main entrance road. Killbear Provincial Park will receive $1,360,000 to electrify campsites and the water filling station, and $410,000 to replace the HVAC and geothermal systems in the visitor centre.

“In 2022, Ontario Parks recorded more than 12.1 million visits and overnight camping grew by nine per cent over 2021, which goes to show the increasing demand for our beautiful provincial parks,” said David Piccini, Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks. “Upgrading infrastructure is one of the ways we’re working to improve the visitor experience, so that they have a memorable and positive time while at our parks, returning with their friends and families for years to come.”

Ongoing investment in Ontario Parks infrastructure is another way the government is expanding recreational opportunities for Ontario families, boosting local tourism and strengthening the protection and health of local wildlife and the environment. This project is part of Ontario’s $41.7 million investment over two years to upgrade and maintain Ontario Parks infrastructure to continue to ensure a modern and enjoyable parks experience.

Over the past several years, camping at Ontario Parks has grown steadily from 4.3 million reserved campsite nights in 2014 to over 6.6 million reserved campsite nights in 2021.

With reservations on the rise, Ontario Parks staff want to ensure that more Ontarians can enjoy campground campsites at some of the more popular parks during their busy summer season.

To help connect more campers with campground sites at their favourite parks, Ontario Parks is reducing the maximum length of stay at select parks between July 1 and the Saturday of the Labour Day long weekend.

Why they are making the change

Ontario Parks heard from countless visitors how frustrating it can be to miss out on a summer camping reservation. With reservations in high demand, it can be difficult to get a campsite at some of the park campgrounds.

With this change, they are giving more people the opportunity to go camping. Reducing the maximum length of stay at some of the parks will help provide more people with the chance to camp and experience Ontario Parks.

Here’s what’s changing

At select parks, they are be reducing the maximum length of stay from 23 nights to seven or 14 nights for campground sites during our busiest camping season, starting in 2023.

The reduced maximum length of stay applies to trips between July 1 and the Saturday of the Labour Day long weekend. Outside of these dates, the maximum stay will be 23 nights.

Booking five months in advance? Don’t worry. When you’re reserving your July stay in February, this change will be in effect.

Note: This change will not impact backcountry camping or roofed accommodations.

Find more information about our reservation rules and regulations.

What about people who want to camp for longer?

Ontario Parks does understand that this change may be disappointing to those who usually enjoy camping for longer periods of time. We want to give more people the opportunity to camp and make their own memories at our parks.

If you prefer a longer stay, try:

visiting one of the many parks with a maximum stay of 23 nights

road-tripping from park to park

booking an off-season stay when the maximum reverts to 23 nights.

Which parks will have reduced maximums?

The changes will be in effect at these parks:

Maximum 7-night stay:

Winter weather travel advisory in effect due to forecasts of heavy snow. Snowfall amounts of 10 to 15 centimetres are expected Wednesday morning through early Thursday morning.

A low pressure system will bring snow to the region. Heavy snow is expected to begin Wednesday morning. Snowfall rates of up to 3 centimetres per hour are possible at times.

Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery. Road closures are possible. If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop.
