For International Women’s Day 2025 (8th March), GoDaddy has released new data to highlight the impact of female founders on Canada’s small business economy.

Figures from Venture Forward – GoDaddy’s research initiative which analyses over 770,000 Canadian small businesses with 0-9 employees – show that 43% are run by women, and 48% of these female-led businesses were started in the last five years.

Despite varying outlooks on the current Canadian economy, with only 35% of female founders expressing optimism, they are more bullish about their own business’ prospects. Seven in ten (70%) are optimistic about their companies over the next six months, and 29% plan to hire new staff in the next year.

Canadian women entrepreneurs are making their mark right now, with over one in four women (26%) the primary income earner for their household. One third (33%) say their small business turns over more than $5,000 revenue in an average month.

What’s more, around three fifths (59%) say becoming a small business owner has enhanced their quality of life, offering a sense of fulfilment and empowerment with the opportunity to pursue their passion.

Female founders are at the forefront of the AI revolution, with almost half (46%) agreeing that the technology will help them compete with larger, better-resourced companies in the next year. Many are already using AI tools to free up time and streamline their business operations. For example, Canadian women are using AI for tasks such as writing content (80%), summarizing information or text (49%), and generating recommendations or strategies for their marketing or operations (45%).

Monique Joustra, founder and owner of nail salon NAIL FIX in the 6IX in the Greater Toronto Area, says about her business journey: “I started my nail salon venture with just one location in 2018. Through unwavering commitment, I was able to build a talented team and loyal client base – and I’m proud to say we now have three salon locations and an Academy. What’s more, I have been able to recruit and train a fantastic team of talented nail professionals. It’s extremely rewarding to know my business can have a positive impact on the local community and economy.

“To any aspiring female entrepreneurs: don’t be afraid to believe in yourself, know your value, and take risks to follow your passion. The rewards are so worth it.”

Young Lee, GoDaddy Canada market lead, said: “The theme for International Women’s Day 2025 is about accelerating action. By shining a light on the successes of Canada’s female founders, that’s exactly what we hope to achieve. These women are contributing to local economies, creating jobs and supporting families.

“A growing era for women entrepreneurs inspires other women what’s possible. Advancements in digital technology and AI-powered solutions like GoDaddy Airo® are removing barriers and empowering a new generation to turn dreams into thriving businesses. From domain names to designing a logo and creating social media content, the barriers-to-entry are lower than ever before.”

On March 8, we honour the contributions and accomplishments of women throughout history and around the world on International Women’s Day. While we come together to celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women, it is also a call for gender equality – something desperately needed for the future of male-dominated skilled trades.

Female representation in Ontario’s construction industry totals only 3.8%, according to BuildForce Canada. This tremendous gender disparity has a substantial effect on the industry and Canada’s economy as a whole. It is anticipated that Canada will need to recruit 300,000 more workers in the next decade to meet the rising demand, a massive task that needs to be met head-on. Women make up only 4.8% of new apprentice registrations, with only 2% completing their training. This indicates not only significant barriers to entry but also hurdles to the completion of apprenticeships.

“Half of the world’s population is female, making half of the labour force female. If we really want to effect change and increase the participation of women in the various sectors of the skilled trades, we need to start creating work environments that are more inclusive,” says Melanie Winter, Program Director for the industrial and motive power trades at Support Ontario Youth.

“It’s important that industry and education partner to show young women what a career path in the trades would look like – representation, positive role models and early exposure to the endless career opportunities for journeypersons are key if we really want to inspire future generations to lead the change necessary to build diverse workforces in each sector. ”

Support Ontario Youth (SOY) is part of the solution – actively seeking to attract and assist female apprentices throughout their journey, providing mentorship and a range of supports, including the recent introduction of a new section on their website aimed specifically at women in the trades.

New Web Portal Supporting Women in their Trades Journeys

Visit www.supportontarioyouth.ca/women-in-trades, and you will find helpful information speaking directly to females in, or looking to enter, the skilled trades. The page states, “We strongly believe that a range of resources and support can make a significant difference to an apprentice’s advancement and retention to help ensure they complete their journey to become a qualified journeyperson.”

This portion of the website also addresses support for employers, showing why female apprentices can be valuable assets, with information on the supports SOY can offer throughout the hiring, training, mentoring and funding process. It also provides a one-of-a-kind networking page, linking various organizations that specialize in promoting, supporting, and funding women’s apprenticeships – providing awareness and access to helpful resources in one central location.

Further Support for Female Apprentices

SOY has been fortunate to collaborate with numerous organizations that share the aim to assist and empower women in the trades. Notable examples include the partnership between SOY, BOLT, and OBCT to create the BOLT Women in Construction Scholarship, as well as the partnership with Saniflo SFA Group for their Apprentice Journey Plumbing Scholarship, that covers the costs of classroom training for a female plumbing apprentice over the five years of their apprenticeship.

SOY’s Program Director for construction trades, Glenda Rahn, understands the importance of these organizations working together to enhance female participation in the skilled trades.

“Partnerships are key – a collaboration with other organizations with common goals provides a holistic approach to enable female apprentices to be prepared for potential roadblocks and to ensure a successful completion of an apprenticeship.”

Assistance for apprentices can take various forms; Glenda elaborates, “Supports such as safety training, job readiness, mentorship and awareness of the culture of the trades, along with a shift of employers’ mindset, can help to provide a rewarding educational experience.”

SOY believes strongly in the power of mentorship and seeks to partner new apprentices with successful women within their chosen trade.

One such mentor with SOY is Brandi Ferenc, a licensed Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems Mechanic and an active and passionate advocate for women in the skilled trades. With over 14 years of experience in the trades, she provides unique insights and mentorship to female apprentices in various trades.

“Mentorship is key for the recruitment and retention of women into the skilled trades. It is a unique experience as a female navigating a male-dominated landscape, and having the support of a mentor can ensure they thrive as opposed to just survive”, explains Brandi.

Through collaborative efforts by various organizations and vocal leaders willing to challenge the status quo, the barriers to women entering and achieving success in the skilled trades are weakening. While change may be slow, significant steps are being taken in the right direction. With this new website, SOY hopes to strengthen that direction for all women who need to understand where to start and what supports are out there to ensure their success within the skilled trades.

Start International Women’s Day (IWD2023) off right March 8 by having breakfast and embracing equity with difference-makers at the Muskoka Discovery Centre in Gravenhurst.

Embracing Equity is the global theme for International Women’s Day and the Muskoka Lakes Chamber of Commerce is inviting everyone to share in this world-wide embrace of equity and inclusion in person, in Muskoka.

“This day celebrates achievement, raises awareness about discrimination, and commits us to action to drive gender parity,” says Chamber Executive Director Norah Fountain.

“We’re bringing together people with different lived experiences to build our understanding of what equity means, to celebrate strides made, and to consider what more needs to be done.”

The morning includes keynote remarks from philanthropist Isabella Baboury, Director of Christian Louboutin Canada, and founder of The Birthday Wish Project. “We work with donors and various community organizations so that every child can have their birthday dreams come true” explains Baboury.

“Isabella (Baboury) works equally hard on giving back as she does on her career – and getting to where she is today was no easy feat,” adds Fountain. “I want to hear more of her story, and I think others will as well.”

There are also gifts donated for the event, including a $2500 door prize from PearlMD Muskoka, a Muskoka Chair and side table from Muskoka Chair Company, bon bons from the Cacao Boys, and hundreds of dollars of Joseph Ribkoff gift certificates from Muskoka Bay Clothing, to name just a few surprises in store for attendees.

Tickets are $35 online at Eventbrite.com/EmbracingEquity or contact the Chamber. The breakfast event runs before museum opening hours from 7:30-9:45am.

As part of the Chamber’s commitment to equity, the Chamber is also raising funds for YWCA Muskoka programs. Artist Steve Tracy, who is building a new studio in Huntsville, donated an original oil painting of Muskoka for the fundraiser. You can bid on “Passing By” at 32auctions.com/EmbracingEquityMuskoka.

March 8, 2023 marks the third International Women’s Day event led by a Chamber in Muskoka. Breakfast this year will be catered again by Indigenous restaurateur Nicole Richard, owner of The Hook and Ladder, and Trinity United Church Gravenhurst offered their kitchen for her to use.

“The offers to help just keep coming,” says Sam Christensen, event volunteer who secured the event’s keynote speaker. “Event partners include Jayne’s Cottages, Chelsey Penrice of Harvey Kalles and Lakeland Networks. Owners of male-owned companies have pitched in, too, including Muskoka Springs, Red Maple Carpentry, North Rosseau Construction and Conklin Construction.

Everything the Chamber does is connected to its goal of prosperity for all, adds Christensen. “Inclusion is part of the prosperity solution, and there’s no better time to recognize that than on International Women’s Day.”

The COVID-19 pandemic has had significant impact on Canadian workers; but women have been disproportionately affected, and their economic recovery has been slower. The Government of Canada recognizes the importance of investing in new training and employment supports for women, including eliminating barriers to their inclusion in the workforce, so that the country can achieve a strong and inclusive economic recovery.

Today, on International Women’s Day, the Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Disability Inclusion, Carla Qualtrough, announced 26 projects approved for funding under the Women’s Employment Readiness pilot program. These projects will test and provide foundational and transferable skills training models, such as literacy and essential skills as well as wrap-around supports to access skills training, including child care, transportation and counselling.

The pilot program funds organizations to provide and test pre-employment and skills development supports for women who face barriers to training and employment, as well as new ways to help employers increase inclusivity in the workplace. The pilot targets racialized women and/or Indigenous women, women with disabilities, women from the LGBTQ2 community and women who have been out of work for an extended period.

The pandemic exacerbated pre-existing labour market inequalities for many Canadians, including women. Women experienced disproportionate job losses, partly because many work in hard hit sectors, such as retail, restaurants and hospitality, and partly because of increased caring responsibilities, among other factors. Employment and training supports need to address the unique needs of diverse women so that they can fully benefit from economic recovery.

The pilot program will support women facing barriers across all 13 provinces and territories. The results of the pilot will inform systemic changes to skills and employment programming, to help women across the country gain better access to skills and training opportunities.

Quotes

“On the eve of International Women’s Day, we can take stock of the progress that women in Canada have made, and recognize the work still ahead. I’m proud to see our government invest in organizations that are leading that vital work by helping marginalized women overcome barriers to employment. This is about empowering more women to create better lives for themselves, while also building the strong, skilled and inclusive workforce Canada needs.”
– Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Disability Inclusion, Carla Qualtrough

“The COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately impacted racialized women, Indigenous women, women with disabilities and the LGBTQ2 community. Today’s announcement, on the eve of International Women’s Day, is part of our government’s commitment to ensure that women are at the forefront of Canada’s economic recovery. We will continue to support women and girls and to ensure that their lived experiences are considered and valued.”
– Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Youth, Marci Ien

Quick Facts

Funding of up to $50 million, for these 26 projects, was included as part of the 2020 Fall Economic Statement.

Women have made great strides in the past decades toward equality in the labour market. However, they still face many barriers and are not yet experiencing outcomes equal to men’s. Although women’s employment rates increased over the past decades, from 47% in 1976 to 67% in 2020, it has been relatively stable since 2008, maintaining a difference of approximately six percentage points compared to men (73%). Some key barriers to gender equality in the labour market persist, notably the unbalanced sharing of family responsibilities, barriers faced by mothers in the workplace, social norms related to gender roles and discrimination in the workplace. The COVID‑19 pandemic has exacerbated many of these challenges.

On average, women earn and participate in the labour market less than men and have lower employment rates. For example, women generally earn $0.87 for every dollar earned by men (Statistics Canada, 2018). The earnings gap is worse for women facing multiple barriers, such as racialized women, Indigenous women, women with disabilities and women from the LGBTQ2 community, among others.

The Government of Canada makes significant investments in programs such as the bilateral labour market development agreements and workforce development agreements with provinces and territories. In addition, federal programs such as the Sectoral Workforce Solutions Program, the Skills for Success program, the Union Training and Innovation Program, the Skilled Trades Awareness and Readiness program, the Apprenticeship Grants and the Apprenticeship Service are helping women get the training and develop the skills they need in the workforce.

Canada invests in Women RISE research initiative to ensure
an equitable COVID-19 recovery

Around the world women and girls have disproportionately suffered the socioeconomic impacts of COVID-19.

Before the pandemic, women were doing three times as much unpaid care and domestic work as men. Data from UN Women shows that women make up 70% of the health workforce worldwide and are therefore at the forefront of the COVID-19 response; in 11 countries where sex-disaggregated data is available women account for 71% of confirmed cases among health care workers. On many fronts, the limited gains made on gender equity over the last decades are at risk of being rolled back.

The COVID-19 pandemic and efforts to control the disease have shocked local and global labour markets, threatened livelihoods, introduced new workplace risks and made unstable work relationships even more precarious. Women have borne the brunt of layoffs and loss of livelihoods, sacrificed their own health at the frontlines of the pandemic response and disproportionately shouldered the burden of the additional caregiving associated with COVID-19.

“We have witnessed how the pandemic has disproportionally disrupted and impacted women’s lives and compromised their autonomy across continents,” said Dominique Bérubé, vice president of research for the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). “SSHRC is pleased to partner with the International Development Research Centre and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research to fund Women RISE to ensure that the social sciences and humanities will contribute to finding sustainable solutions that will advance the well-being and leadership of women during and after COVID-19.”

To address the gendered impacts of COVID-19, Canada’s International Development Research Centre, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council have launched Women RISE (Women’s health and economic empowerment for a COVID-19 Recovery that is Inclusive, Sustainable and Equitable), a $22-million CAD research initiative.

Women RISE will support global action-oriented, gender-transformative research on how women’s health and their work, whether paid or unpaid, intersect and interact in the preparation for, response to and recovery from COVID-19. Under the initiative, teams of researchers from low- and middle- income countries and Canada will inform solutions and strategies to improve women’s health and socioeconomic well-being throughout the recovery from COVID-19.

“Women RISE is a commitment to redouble our efforts towards achieving gender equality,” said Steven J. Hoffman, scientific director of the Institute of Population and Public Health at the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. “By strengthening Canadian and global capacity to conduct gender-transformative research, this initiative will improve the lives of women around the world.”

Women RISE takes action on global research priorities identified in the United Nations Research Roadmap for the COVID-19 Recovery and is part of Canada’s commitment to gender equality, to empowering women and girls around the world and to promoting their human rights and well-being.

“By supporting Women RISE with our partners, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, we will continue to foster collaboration between Canadian researchers and those in low- and middle-income countries,” said Dominique Charron, vice president of Programs and Partnerships for the International Development Research Centre. “We hope this initiative will identify solutions that improve women’s health and socio-economic status during the COVID-19 pandemic and as we recover from it.”
