Muskoka, ON – The District of Muskoka is reconstructing King William Street from Scott Street to Highway 60. The project is scheduled to start as early as late spring and is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.

The project is part of the District’s investment in essential systems that make housing possible and will increase capacity to support 3,200 new homes in the Town of Huntsville. 

Replacement and upgrades to aging water, wastewater and transportation infrastructure will boost housing and the economy locally and support the long-term health of Muskoka’s lakes, rivers and communities. 

“Building homes starts long before the construction of actual houses. The King William Street reconstruction project is an excellent example of this,” said Jeff Lehman, District of Muskoka Chair. “By replacing the old road surface and underground pipes, we are ensuring the services we need today keep working, while also making intersections safer, improving access for everyone, and preparing the area for future homes and new development.” 

Work will include removing and replacing: 

• Aboveground: road, traffic signals  
• Underground: sanitary and storm sewers, watermains 
• Streetscape: curbs, sidewalks, boulevards 

What the Community Needs to Know   

Traffic Impacts  

• To allow this work to be completed safely and efficiently, parts of King William Street will be partially closed and limited to one-way traffic. 

Access Maintained 

• Access to all businesses will be maintained during construction. 
• A dedicated lane will be maintained for all emergency vehicles. 
• Pedestrian crossings at Rogers Cove Drive and the Huntsville Place Mall entrance will remain open. 

Updates and Scheduling 

• Municipal 511 will be updated to help keep Google Maps and Waze current. 
• Delays may occur due to unforeseen conditions. The District will provide advance notice where possible.

Construction Café 

• Residents are invited to attend the project’s first Construction Café on Wednesday, May 6, 2026 at Henrietta’s Pine Bakery at 92 King William Street in Huntsville. 
• Residents can drop in to this relaxed, casual session any time between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. to enjoy a free coffee with the project team, while discussing reconstruction updates and asking questions.

On March 31, 2026, around 8:59 p.m., members of the Huntsville OPP were conducting proactive traffic enforcement on Highway 60 when they observed a vehicle travelling at a noticeably high rate of speed. The officer confirmed the speed to be more than double the posted 70km/h speed limit.

As a result, Hasan Rahmeh, 27-year-old of Oakville Ontario was charged with: Drive Motor Vehicle – Perform Stunt – Excessive Speed.

The driver received a 30-day license suspension, and their vehicle was impounded for 14 days. The driver is to appear in Provincial Offenses Court in Bracebridge Ontario in June 2026.

In Ontario, stunt driving charges apply if you drive 40 km/h or more over the limit on roads with a limit under 80 km/h, 50 km/h or more over on roads limit 80 km/h or higher, or any speed of 150 km/h or higher. This immediately results in a 30-day license suspension and 14-day vehicle impoundment

Speeding contributes to loss of life on our roads. In 2025, there were 75 deaths on Ontario Roads that were attributed to speeding. Drivers can adopt safe, defensive driving behaviours, which can go a long way in reducing the number of preventable deaths.

As a result of the collision, highway closures and delays for several hours resulted due to the investigation.

Police, Huntsville Fire Department, and Muskoka Ambulance arrived on scene.  Three vehicles were identified, a Kia, a Land Rover and a Nissan. The driver of the Land Rover was airlifted to a Toronto Trauma Centre via Ornge. Two other involved people suffered minor injuries and were treated and released.

The O.P.P. Technical Collision Investigation unit attended the scene to assist with the investigation.

This is an on-going investigation. There are no updates on any injuries the time of this release.

The Huntsville O.P.P. want to extend a thank you to motorists who were confronted with delays and the patience they exhibited.

On June 8, 2025, around 4:37 pm, an officer of the Huntsville OPP was conducting traffic enforcement on Highway 60 when they observed a vehicle travelling at a noticeably high rate of speed. The officer confirmed the speed to be 122 km per hour in a posted 70 km per hour zone.

As a result, Rajkaran GREWAL , 24-year-old of Winnipeg MB was charged with: Drive Motor Vehicle – Perform Stunt – Excessive Speed, contrary to Section 172(1) of the Highway Traffic Act.

On June 16, 2025 around 4:43pm, an officer of the Huntsville OPP was conducting traffic enforcement on Highway 60, and observed a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed. The officer confirmed the speed to be 123 km per hour in a posted 70 km per hour zone.

As a result, Connor REID, 25-year-old from Burks Falls was charged with: Drive Motor Vehicle – Perform Stunt – Excessive Speed, contrary to Section 172(1) of the Highway Traffic Act.

Both drivers received a 30-day license suspension, and their vehicles were impounded for 14 days. All are to appear in court at a later date.

Possible Penalties Upon Conviction:

• Fines: A minimum fine of $2,000, and a maximum of $10,000.
• Demerit Points: Six demerit points will be added to your driving record.
• License Suspension: A first-time conviction can result in a license suspension of one to three years.
• Jail Time: Up to six months in jail is a possibility for a first offense.
• Driver Improvement Course: A mandatory driver improvement course.
• Insurance Costs: A conviction may impact your insurance premiums
• Long-term Consequences: Subsequent convictions will result in progressively harsher penalties, including potential lifetime license suspension.

On May 10, 2025, at approximately 9:00 p.m. the West Parry Sound OPP received a traffic complaint regarding an erratic driver on Highway 69 in Carling Township. Officers were able to locate and stop the vehicle.

As a result of the investigation, Kaeden Meston, 25 years-of-age of Bengough Saskatchewan was charged with:

• Operation while impaired – alcohol
• Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80plus)
• Driving motor vehicle with cannabis readily available

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Parry Sound on June 19, 2025. The accused was also issued a 90-day Administrative Drivers Licence Suspension (ADLS), and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

On January 11, 2025, and January 12, 2025, Officers of the Huntsville OPP Detachment investigated reports of a person spray painting graffiti on the entrance sign of Lake Tree residence sign located on Highway 60 in the and at the Esso Gas Station nearby.

On July 13, 2024, just before 2:00 p.m., members of the Killaloe Detachment conducted a traffic stop for speed on a mini van on 60 Highway, in the Township of Killaloe Hagarty and Richards.

The 82-year-old driver from Bala was found to be travelling at 141 km/h in a posted 80 km/h zone. As a result of police investigation, the driver was charged with Operating a Motor Vehicle while Performing a Stunt – Speeding contrary to the Highway Traffic Act. The defendant was issued a summons to appear in court at the Ontario Court of Justice, Pembroke. The vehicle was towed and impounded for fourteen days. The driver’s licence was seized and suspended for thirty days.

On June 23, 2024, just after 3:00 p.m., Killaloe OPP members responded to a collision on 60 Highway, near Paplinskie Road, in the Township of South Algonquin.

Investigation has revealed the 22-year-old driver of a passenger car from Ottawa was turning and was struck by the oncoming 36-year-old driver of a sport utility vehicle (SUV) from Dwight.

The driver from Ottawa has been charged with unsafe move, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act and issued a Provincial Offences Act notice. Both vehicles were towed.

No injuries were reported.

On January 16, 2024, just before 5: 00 a.m., members of the Killaloe Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), responded to a single motor vehicle collision involving a pickup truck on 60 Highway, near Duquette Road in the Township of North Algona Wilberforce.

As part of the investigation, the driver was transported to the detachment for further testing. As a result of the investigation, 40-year-old Jordan Lafave of Moose Creek was arrested and charged with the following Criminal Code offences:

· impaired operation; and,
· impaired over 80.

The accused was released and is scheduled to appear in court on February 14, 2024, Ontario Court of Justice, Pembroke.

The accused’s driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days, and the vehicle towed and impounded.

OPP warn drivers of not only the impending dangers of impaired driving such as injury and death, but also of the financial considerations which include bills for towing and impounding a vehicle, paying for legal assistance, fines, licence reinstatement and higher vehicle premiums. Don’t drink or drive high.

On December 8, 2023, around 3:50 p.m., District of Nipissing Paramedic Services and the Township of South Algonquin Fire Department responded alongside OPP to a motor vehicle collision on Highway 60 near the Hemlock Bluff hiking trail in Algonquin Provincial Park. There were two vehicles involved, a tractor-trailer and passenger vehicle.

The highway remained closed while OPP Technical Collision Investigation (TCI) members investigated.

Investigation revealed the tractor-trailer was travelling westbound and the passenger vehicle was travelling eastbound when the two vehicles collided. The driver of the passenger vehicle was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The deceased was identified as a 57-year-old of Mississauga. The name of the person was not released.

No charges were laid in relation to the collision.
