Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH), in partnership with the HART of Simcoe County, has officially opened the region’s first publicly funded, co-ed live-in addictions treatment centre in Barrie.

The new 21-day program offers a safe, supportive environment for individuals facing some of the most complex health and social challenges including addiction, mental illness and housing insecurity.

“Addiction recovery is not a straight path, and it’s not something people should have to navigate alone,” says Gail Hunt, RVH President and CEO. “This program reflects our commitment to delivering connected, community-based care that meets people where they are.”

Unlike traditional outpatient services, live-in treatment provides a comprehensive, immersive model of care which is particularly vital for individuals without stable housing who may not be able to access or succeed in community-based programs.

Each cohort of up to 12 clients will live onsite and take part in structured daily programming, including individual and group counselling, life skills development, mindfulness practices and recreational therapy. Care is delivered by a multidisciplinary team of social workers, addiction counsellors, a recreation therapist and program supervisor, all focused on providing person-centred care rooted in safety, dignity and recovery.

“We know that live-in treatment offers a more immersive and consistent level of support, and research shows it has the greatest impact for people with complex needs,” says Brandon Lewicki, Operations Director of RVH’s Mental Health and Addictions Program. “We welcomed our first cohort in July, and the feedback from clients confirms that this type of program gives people the chance to stabilize, heal and rebuild — especially when they’re surrounded by a team that believes in their potential and meets them with compassion.”

Referrals to the live-in program come through community partners as part of RVH’s role in the HART of Simcoe County, a collaborative model transforming care for individuals facing homelessness, addiction and mental health challenges. Funding for Homeless and Addiction Recovery Treatment Hubs (HART Hubs) was announced by the Provincial Government in January 2025, with the HART of Simcoe County officially launching in June 2026.

Priority is given to individuals at highest risk and experiencing housing insecurity. Before entering, each client completes a minimum 24-hour stabilization period through RVH’s Withdrawal Management Services to ensure they are safe, supported and ready to fully engage in treatment.

Located on Dunlop Street West, the centre is close to RVH’s existing addiction services, including the Rapid Access Addiction Medicine (RAAM) clinic. This proximity ensures clients can access a full continuum of care all in one connected system.

“What sets this program and partnership apart is its strong connection to a broad network of wraparound supports from primary care and mental health to Indigenous Patient Navigation and housing,” says Lewicki. “We’re meeting people where they are, supporting their path to recovery, and fostering an inclusive, safe environment that addresses mental health, addiction and the social factors affecting health.”

The District of Parry Sound Social Services Administration Board (DSSAB) is pleased to announce the launch of its transitional housing program on the east side of the Parry Sound District, which welcomed its first participants last month.

Provincially funded through the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing’s Homelessness Prevention Program (HPP), this intensive program will invite participation from eligible individuals from the DSSAB’s By-Name List who require additional support to obtain and maintain safe and stable housing. With the assistance of DSSAB staff, each participant will develop an action plan, with progress monitored through weekly meetings, or more often depending on the needs of the individual.

“Coordination of wraparound supports with our community partners will be crucial to the success of these participants and the program,” said Tammy MacKenzie, Chief Administrative Officer.

“This program relies on strong partnerships with our Mental Health and Addictions Worker from the West Parry Sound Health Centre, Community Paramedicine, and support from the Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinics and CMHA Muskoka-Parry Sound. It is also staff-driven through the efforts of our Housing Stability and Ontario Works teams who provide one-on-one housing, life stabilization and financial assistance.”

The project was made possible through the conversion of an existing duplex, recently converted into two one-bedroom units and two two-bedroom units for a total of six bedrooms. Intended to provide secure and stable housing for vulnerable individuals at risk of homelessness, the project’s goal is to provide stability in a home setting that encourages life skills and housing responsibilities.

“This program will allow the people we serve the time they need and support necessary to ensure better outcomes in their exit from homelessness,” said Rick Zanussi, DSSAB Board Chair. “This project is a model that we would like to replicate across the district as new opportunities become available.”

If you know of someone who may be experiencing homelessness, at risk of homelessness, couch-surfing or struggling to maintain their home, please contact the office to discuss how being added to the By-Name List can help. Please call (705)746-7777 Ext 5269 or visit www.psdssab.org/bynamelist for more information.

Though the Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY) may sound like a frigid weather forecast, it’s actually a nation-wide fundraising event and it’s coming to communities across Canada, including Huntsville and Gravenhurst, on Feb. 26.

CNOY is an annual fundraising walk that supports local charity partners across the country including food banks, shelters and other outreach organizations. The Table Soup Kitchen Foundation in Huntsville has been participating in the event for a decade now while Gravenhurst Against Poverty (GAP) is going on year four. For both organizations, CNOY is their biggest fundraiser of the year. Heather Cassie, founder and CEO of the Table, said it’s exciting to join 167 locations across Canada in raising money and bringing attention to such meaningful causes.

“It’s such an important thing to be part of because our community has lots of people who are hungry, hurting and homeless,” Cassie said. “It’s a simple way to just show support and kindness and love to people that you might not know personally but that are here around you.”

Last year’s event took a virtual approach due to the pandemic, so participants were able to complete their walk any time during February on routes of their own choosing. This year, Muskoka residents have the option to do that again or join other walkers for the events in Huntsville and Gravenhurst on Feb. 26. The start and end points will be the Table’s facilities at 9 Hanes Street in Huntsville and the Lion’s Pavilion at the Muskoka Wharf in Gravenhurst.

CNOY has been the Table’s largest annual fundraiser ever since they started participating ten years ago. The money raised funds their eight different services, which include a food bank, a community kitchen and a men’s shelter, to name a few. They serve people from all walks of life, Cassie said, and it’s always without judgment.

“Whether it’s winter tires or a furnace breaking or not being able to work for a bit, whatever it might be, if we can help alleviate some of anyone’s financial burden, we are here with no questions asked,” she said. “You don’t have to prove your need, so even if you come once and it makes a bit of a difference, or if you come weekly to our food bank, twice a week to the soup kitchen, anybody’s welcome.”

The organization was also able to purchase their two buildings in Huntsville last year, so any additional funds will be used to fix up parts of the buildings that are in desperate need of repair, Cassie said. While their services always take priority, their team hopes to improve the buildings as a way to honour the people who use their services and make them feel more welcome.

Since they’ve been able to raise more and more every year, the team at the Table decided on a goal of $60,000 for this year’s event. Their supporters have raised 60 per cent of that goal already and there’s still plenty of time to sign up.

It’s not a huge time commitment, Cassie said, and every little bit goes a long way. The staff and volunteers at the Table want to thank their event director Paula Paunic for all her work on the event as well as their sponsors for supporting their efforts.

The folks behind Gravenhurst’s CNOY event are also feeling grateful after reaching their fundraising goal twice, weeks ahead of the actual event. They started by surpassing their goal of $75,000 and raising the target to $100,000. Now, they’ve exceeded that goal as well with more than $108,000 raised, allowing them to top the event’s scoreboard.

“I knew with how many people were connected to the organization that we were going to have a big year, but if you’d said to me in October, November when we were having our first conversations about the event for this year, I could not possibly have predicted that it would be where we are,” said Bryan White, Gravenhurst CNOY committee co-chair. “To be leading this beautiful country of Canada of ours as far as the number of walkers registered and the total funds raised to date, it’s unbelievable.”

GAP formed in early 2018 with the goal of addressing poverty in the region. They started by targeting food insecurity with a supplemental food program. The organization serves more than 600 people through the program each week and they’ve expanded their offerings to include transportation, mental wellness and youth programs as well.

Despite their early fundraising success, they’re not slowing down their efforts to bring in as much money as possible. CNOY has played a big role in allowing GAP to grow and this year’s event is no different.

“We’re still just as motivated and driven to continue to raise as much funds [and] resources as possible because there’s so many great things on the horizon for GAP,” White said.
“Beyond the three pillars of service, the food, the transportation and mental wellness, there’s the possibility hopefully in the near future of GAP being able to acquire a physical space downtown.”

The space would become a community hub with affordable housing units, an emergency youth shelter, a community kitchen and a dedicated youth centre, White said. With that goal in mind, he can’t wait to see where the fundraising total ends up on Feb. 26.

It’ll be special to once again gather with volunteers and walkers in a safe way for this year’s event, he said, and it’s an important reminder of the homelessness and poverty that exists in Muskoka, despite the affluent reputation of the region.

“This event, the vision, the mission behind it is to support those who are faced with what we call the three Hs, those who are hurt, those who are hungry and those who are homeless,” White said. “We can’t live in a community where there are people who are hungry and don’t have a meal every day three times a day, so it’s really important for us to step up and support that.”

COVID closures mean most gyms are quiet these days, but things are still bustling at Hive Muskoka as a small team of volunteers puts together bags of supplies for locals experiencing homelessness, poverty and similar struggles.

Fyonna Vanderwerf is the owner and CEO of Hive Muskoka in Bracebridge. While the main focus at Hive is fitness, Vanderwerf said community growth and outreach is an important part of her business. One of the ways her team has given back to the community is by handing out essentials like toothbrushes, soap and socks to those who need them. They’ve also distributed tents, bedding and toiletries to unhoused people in the area among other forms of outreach.

“We make our community better, we make our community healthier and we make our community kinder by paying things forward,” Vanderwerf said. “I’ve always been surrounded by good, kind people and you pay that kind of stuff forward.”

When gym goer Kim Laurie heard about their efforts, she was inspired to tell Vanderwerf about an initiative from her work in mental health and addictions.

“We have things called comfort kits,” Laurie said. “In those comfort kits, we have various items to help people make their day a little easier… a pair of mitts, or a hat and socks, maybe a reusable coffee mug.”

Paying it forward with cozy kits

The kits also typically include hygiene products, clothing and snacks like granola bars as well as oatmeal packets, tea and hot chocolate that can be made with just hot water. Products like toilet paper are something people often take for granted, Laurie said, but many people can’t just go buy those things, whether it’s due to money problems, disabilities or a variety of other reasons.

Laurie said it’s been ingrained in her from a young age to look out for other people. She grew up in a family that often fed any neighbours that needed it. She later worked in hospitality, bringing hot meals to the homeless people in her area. More than anything though, her work in mental health and addictions has helped her see the day-to-day struggles so many people face.

“I work in mental health initiatives and I have my whole career, so it’s sort of a natural thing that I consider is how to make somebody’s day a little easier,” Laurie said. “Nobody really wants to look at some of the realities in our own communities, but the homelessness rate is pretty significant.”

Though homelessness is more prevalent, and more obvious, in larger city centres, Laurie wants to remind people of the poverty and food insecurity that exist even in smaller communities.

As of May 2021, 338 of the 628 households on the social housing waitlist were waiting for a one bedroom unit with a wait time of up to 8 years, according to the District of Muskoka’s annual housing and homelessness report. In the year preceding the report, the district received 784 requests for assistance in obtaining housing as well as 984 requests for other types of support from residents experiencing homelessness.

With that level of need in mind, Laurie said she’s grateful to be working with Hive and witnessing the hope and passion Vanderwerf instills in others. The kits, which Vanderwerf calls cozy kits, are a way to help people while also educating others along the way.

“Working in mental health and addictions, one of the advocacy pieces I’ve always worked on was to decrease stigma,” Laurie said. “With mental health and addictions, but also transitional housing and homelessness, there’s massive stigma and trying to educate [the] community, it’s always one of my goals.”

Dignity through daily essentials

Vanderwerf said the cozy kits are just a bandaid when it comes to helping the many people who are struggling in the region, but it’s a simple way to show kindness to others. It’s a human right to live with dignity, she said, and things like toilet paper, adult diapers and hygiene products are part of that.

“It’s very hard for people to admit that they need help, and it’s even harder to admit that you don’t have the basic things that everyone else presumes that you have,” Vanderwerf said. “That’s what the cozy kits are all about. When you don’t have money for toilet paper, that’s a different level of poverty. I don’t think a lot of people in our community know that’s here.”

The contents of Hive’s cozy kits vary based on what donations come in, but all of them include food, toilet paper and toiletries. They also create kits for specific age groups, including things like dignity products and heavy sweaters for seniors as well as toys and clothing for kids.

Vanderwerf works with organizations like Mind Aid and Muskoka Victim Services to distribute the kits to people across the region, but she offers them to anyone who reaches out and expresses need as well. She also provides mini toiletry kits to Manna Food Bank, where she sits on the Board of Directors, so that people coming for food pick-up can also get other important supplies.

She and her team of volunteers are happy to deliver kits to locals, and they hope to put a bin outside of Hive Muskoka soon to allow for private pick-up of the kits as well as donation drop-offs. Though she’s glad to be able to help others, after distributing more than 150 kits over the past week, she worries about the people they could be missing.

“It’s amazing that people feel comfortable and safe to reach out and say they need help,” she said. “And it’s wonderful to see people do that, but also, as someone in the community that’s been here for a while, it’s a bit upsetting to see this many people who are struggling so much.”

An outpouring of generosity

While it’s hard to see the immense need present in the community, the project has also shown Vanderwerf how much generosity there is. Local businesses like Cavalcade Ford and Cottage Country Dental have donated things like money and dental supplies. One person drove almost an hour each way to drop off two cases of adult hygiene products. Someone else left a bin on their porch for a week and collected donations from their neighbours, which allowed for the creation of 21 kits.

After sharing the details of the project on Facebook, dozens of people reached out in support. Over 50 people came by in the last week to drop off donations and the majority of them wanted to remain anonymous, hoping to simply help out their neighbours. All donations are disinfected and left for three days before being packed up, and they’re taking in more donations at the Hive every day.

They have a room full of items waiting to be packed, but they can always use more toiletries, travel-sized products included, as well as winter accessories, packaged snack foods and hygiene products like toilet paper, adult diapers and hand sanitizer. People looking to make donations can email Vanderwerf to make arrangements for drop-off, or if they’re located in Bracebridge or Gravenhurst, volunteers may be able to pick up donations as well.

Vanderwerf hopes spreading the word about their efforts will help inspire others to join in or start their own initiatives, especially because the kits are so easy to make. Though the pandemic has created countless challenges, it’s also brought out the best in many people, she said.

“There are more people in our community that want to help than people that [don’t],” Vanderwerf said. “There’s more kindness in our community than anything else. There really is.”

Allstate Canada is partnering with the Shoebox Project for the sixth year in a row and this time around, the company is offering to match all monetary donations up to $25,000 until Dec. 12.

The Shoebox Project is a national charity that hosts gift drives across the country. Local branches of the organization collect shoeboxes containing $50 worth of little luxuries for women facing homelessness and poverty. The Muskoka branch just wrapped up their campaign for the year, collecting 1,372 shoeboxes for women in the region. As part of the matching challenge, donors can choose to make a contribution to the project’s general fund, to their local branch of the Shoebox Project, or in support of Indigenous women. The matching funds donated by Allstate will go to the project’s general fund.

“We try to direct as many of the individual donations back to the local community as we can, so we really rely on corporate partners to support our day-to-day operations,” said Lesley Hendry, executive director of the Shoebox Project. “Since we are a national charity, we have necessary expenses that need to be covered and the corporate partners that we have really help us with that.”

Hendry said it’s wonderful to have an enthusiastic partner like Allstate on board for the sixth year in a row. The company has donated money in past years, but this is the first time their contribution has been made in the form of a matching challenge. Hendry is excited to see how it goes and hopes it will encourage donors to be generous since their contributions will be matched by Allstate.

It also means a lot to Hendry to see local efforts in communities like Muskoka continue to thrive. Volunteers in Muskoka have done a great job growing the local chapter, she said, and it’s amazing to see the support they receive year after year.

“The impact that our volunteers are able to have at a community level has been so inspirational,” Hendry said. “The Shoebox Project is just a simple but fun way to get everybody thinking about others in their community and kind of putting themselves in their shoes. Especially in Muskoka where there’s a big disparity of wealth, I think it’s really impactful.”

Since Shoebox Project efforts are done for the year in Muskoka, any funds donated to the Muskoka branch will be used for other initiatives throughout the year, said local organizer Jennifer Stevenson. Holidays like Mother’s Day and International Women’s Day present another opportunity to celebrate women in the region, so any donations through the campaign would go toward those efforts.

During her time as executive director, Hendry said one of the most special parts of the job has been witnessing the different ways each community runs their shoebox drives to address the challenges and needs of their neighbours. The gifts make a real difference to the women who receive them, and for Hendry, one of the most impactful parts of the process is seeing former recipients return as donors.

“Many shoebox recipients come back once they’re in a better position as a donor and they’ll make a shoebox for somebody else, kind of paying it forward, so that’s been really interesting to see,” she said. “It really just goes to show that Shoebox really did make an impression on that person, enough that now that they have an extra $50, they’re doing the same for somebody else.”

The gifts contained in the shoeboxes go beyond just essentials to include special items like gift cards, luxury beauty products and hand-written notes. These additions help give the recipients a sense of dignity, Hendry said, while also reminding them that they belong to a community that cares.

“You can’t underestimate the power of a kind gesture,” she said. “It’s not a difficult thing to make a shoebox and it’s quite fun and creative, but it can have a really important impact on the person that receives it.”

Organizers are wrapping up their work for the season after they finished distributing the shoeboxes to local agencies on Dec. 6. They were aiming to collect between 1,370 and 1,400 shoeboxes, so after last year’s virtual approach, they were excited to meet this year’s goal. Jennifer Stevenson and her daughter-in-law Sarah took over as coordinators of the local project last year. Stevenson said it was amazing to watch the boxes stack up after handing out mostly gift cards during their first year as organizers, and she’s grateful for the volunteers that made it all possible.

“The ladies, I call them the shoebox elves, are very well seasoned supporters of shoebox and have done these boxes with the previous team over the years,” she said. “Their efforts were unsurpassed. They were absolutely incredible and kept a really amazing pace and there was a lot of laughter and fun in the room and a lot of joy in creating these beautiful boxes.”

The team of volunteers checked every box to make sure they were all equal and contained about $50 worth of gifts. They topped boxes off with donations of scarves, hats and other items along with adding hand-written cards where necessary. Financial donations went toward topping off existing boxes as well as creating new ones altogether, which helped them to meet their goal of 1,370.

The feedback from the agencies that receive and distribute the gifts to local women has been amazing, Stevenson said. Working on the Muskoka Shoebox Project has been very rewarding and she’s met a lot of amazing women from Muskoka in the process, which is why she and her daughter-in-law plan to stay on as organizers for the foreseeable future.

“We’re so grateful to the community, those that donated the boxes, those that supported us from a retail standpoint, the service organizations that financially supported us,” Stevenson said. “It’s definitely a community effort and it cannot get done without people, time and the generosity of the community.”

The Dec. 1 deadline for the Muskoka Shoebox Project is quickly approaching and organizers are still looking to collect more than 800 shoeboxes for local women affected by poverty and homelessness.

Organizer Jennifer Stevenson said collection has been slower than expected this year, likely due to the limits on gathering. They’ve collected less than 500 boxes so far, but Stevenson said they’re optimistic after several groups reached out to say they’ll be bringing more boxes to donate. They’re aiming to collect about 1,370 to 1,400 boxes to meet the needs of the women’s shelters and community agencies they support, and she said it’s been heartwarming to see the beautiful boxes created by and for locals.

“I think it is important to say that it is not too late to shop for the little luxuries that they would put in a shoebox,” Stevenson said. “If they cannot find a box, it has been a bit challenging, they can drop their gift off in a bag and we will box and wrap it.”

Each shoebox should contain about $50 worth of gifts, including sweet treats, toiletries, gift cards and cozy items like hats or mittens. Shoeboxes can be dropped off at businesses in Huntsville, Bracebridge, Gravenhurst, Bala and Port Carling before the deadline on Dec. 1.

People who don’t have time to shop can still participate by creating a virtual shoebox, which generates a financial donation to the project. Single items like body wash, shampoo, cozy socks and scarves can also be donated at any of the drop-off locations to help top up existing shoeboxes.

“We are working hard to meet our goal and the support of the community is imperative,” Stevenson said. “Every box donated to us stays in Muskoka and will be given to a local woman in need. Help spread a little joy this holiday season with someone less fortunate.”

Each shoebox contains about $50 worth of gifts, such as sweets, toiletries, gift cards and cozy items like mittens or socks for women impacted by homelessness. The Shoebox Project offers a guide to creating shoeboxes, and while large gatherings are still on hold, it’s a great chance to get together with a few friends and family members to kick off the holiday season with a gesture of goodwill, said Bala resident Jennifer Stevenson. Stevenson and her daughter-in-law Sarah took on the role of organizing the local project last year, so they’re excited to collect physical shoeboxes for the first time after last year’s virtual approach.

“It brings the community together in such a different way,” Stevenson said. “The last couple of years have been a bit of a challenge for people all around, so this is pretty exciting.”

Stevenson and her daughter-in-law were longtime supporters of the Muskoka Shoebox Project before becoming organizers. They hosted shoebox parties for years and it was during a donation drop-off that Stevenson realized the full extent of the local efforts. Joanne Buie, Penny Burns and Barb Baldwin were still serving as organizers for the event when Stevenson saw the warehouse with hundreds of shoeboxes inside.

“It was really quite something,” Stevenson said. “I was happy that we were able to provide something, but I was also shocked by the need [with] how many boxes they had collected and how many boxes they were having to distribute. That was when I really realized that the need was huge.”

The agencies that receive and distribute the shoeboxes have expressed increased need this year, Stevenson said, but she’s optimistic about reaching their goal of 1,400 based on last year’s success. Even with the limitations of hosting a virtual event, they were able to give out more than 1,000 gifts to local women in need.

Christmas can be a lonely and difficult time for some people, Stevenson said, particularly for women who are displaced from their homes or estranged from their families. The Shoebox Project helps remind them that someone out there cares.

“Every box counts, and the effort people put towards doing a shoebox, whether they make one or 10, they all make a huge difference,” Stevenson said. “They go to somebody in need and it’s really something special, especially at Christmas.”

For people who don’t have the time or resources to put together a physical shoebox, creating a virtual shoebox is still an option. Donors can go online and select items to put in a virtual shoebox, which generates a monetary donation for the Shoebox Project.

Those interested in contributing can also donate money, gift cards or even single items like mittens or hats, which help to top up shoeboxes and make all the gifts equal for the women receiving them. Every donation, big and small, helps support the community and the women in it.

“This is a great community and it’s very generous,” Stevenson said. “People look after each other and we want to be part of that.”

After months of planning, the medical clinic at The Lighthouse will be opening tomorrow, Tuesday, September 14.

The Lighthouse is a soup kitchen and shelter in Orillia that has been operating since 1992. The organization has partnered with the Simcoe County Paramedics for over a year and the paramedics will continue to serve Lighthouse participants through the clinic. Dr. Anna Naylor, who is the point person for the paramedics, will also be serving participants out of the clinic.

Part of moving toward wellness when experiencing homelessness is physical health, said Executive Director Linda Goodall, so the clinic will be available to anyone staying at the shelter or at supportive housing. As of now, clinic services will not be available to the public.
