Members of the Haliburton Highlands Detachment, with assistance from the Central Region Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU) and the Offender Management and Apprehension Program (OMAP), began investigating multiple reports of break and enters, thefts, suspicious persons, and stolen vehicle occurrences throughout May and June 2026.

On Wednesday, June 24, 2026, officers located and arrested Joseph BELL, age 34, of Algonquin Highlands, and charged the accused with these following offences:

• Theft under $5,000 – three counts

• Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 – three counts

• Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000

• Break and enter to a dwelling – two counts

• Operation while prohibited – two counts

• Fail to comply with probation

During the investigation, officers recovered stolen property, including personal items, stolen licence plates, and a side-by-side vehicle valued at approximately $30,000.

The accused remains in custody and is scheduled to appear for a bail hearing before the Ontario Court of Justice in Lindsay on Friday, June 26, 2026.

On Sunday, June 21, 2026, at approximately 1:42 p.m., Haliburton Highlands OPP members, along with EMS and Fire, responded to a report of an injured person near a bridge on Stanhope Airport Road, between All Seasons Court and Pine Needle Trail, in Algonquin Highlands Township.

The preliminary investigation indicated that an individual had dove from the bridge and struck a boat travelling on the water below. The individual was able to exit the water and make their way to a nearby residence where they received assistance.

Despite life-saving efforts, a 38-year-old from Algonquin Highlands was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The investigation remains ongoing with assistance from the OPP Central Region Traffic Incident Management Enforcement (TIME) team.

Congratulations to Haliburton Highlands Secondary School (HHSS) Grade 12 student, Aurora Wesley, who was recently selected as the recipient of the Terry Fox Humanitarian Award!

The award is given out to only 15 students in Canada and recognizes young humanitarians who have worked tirelessly to channel the same values and goals that Terry Fox held—a passion for helping those in need and/or demonstrating perseverance in the face of adversity.

Through the award, Aurora will receive $30,000 to go towards her post-secondary education, in which she will be studying business administration at Western University in the fall.

“Aurora is very deserving of this recognition. Throughout her time at HHSS, she has been involved in making the school and community a better place. On Sunday, October 5, 2025, at 11:40 a.m., Haliburton Highlands OPP Detachment responded to a serious collision involving a motorcycle and a vehicle. The impact caused the truck to catch fire, which was extinguished by fire services at the scene. The driver and passenger of the motorcycle, a 64-year-old female and a 79-year-old male, were pronounced deceased at the scene.

The OPP Traffic Incident Management Enforcement (TIME) team is assisting with the ongoing investigation and Highway 118, east of Carnarvon, is currently closed between Tulip Road and the 25^th Line. The public is advised to avoid the area and plan alternate routes as the closure is expected to be lengthy.

On Tuesday, September 16, 2025, members of the Haliburton Highlands OPP Detachment and Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU), with the assistance of the Tactics and Rescue Unit (TRU), Canine Unit, Emergence Response Team (ERT), and the Provincial Joint Forces Cannabis Enforcement Team (PJFCET), executed a search warrant at a location on Soyers Lake Road in the Township of Minden Hills. Items seized include 2,413 cannabis plants, twenty shotgun shells, and one air rifle.

As a result of the investigation, Guo-Zhang Chen, 54 of Scarborough, and Yaping Wu, 36 of Scarborough, have both been charged with:

·        Cultivate, propagate or harvest a cannabis plant that is from seed or plant material that is illicit cannabis.

The accused are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Minden at a later date.

On Thursday, September 4, 2025, members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Haliburton Highlands Detachment Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU), with assistance from the City of Kawartha Lakes Detachment CSCU executed a CDSA search warrant at a residence on Skyline Park Road in Municipality of Dysart Et Al.

As a result of the search, police seized suspected crack cocaine, approximately $4,225 in Canadian currency, and an imitation firearm.

As a result of the investigation, Christine Reynolds, 68-years-old from Dysart et al, was arrested and charged with:

• Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – cocaine

• Possession of imitation weapon for dangerous purpose

• Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5000

Additionally, Jaydon Sandiford, 18-years-old from Oshawa; was arrested and charged with:

• Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – cocaine

• Possession of imitation weapon for dangerous purpose

• Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5000

Additionally, Jaheim Thompson, 18-years-old from Oshawa, was arrested and charged with:

• Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – cocaine

• Possession of imitation weapon for dangerous purpose

• Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5000

The three accused are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in November.

On Tuesday, August 19, 2025, at approximately 6:43 p.m., the Haliburton Highlands OPP received a call from EMS related to a single-vehicle rollover involving a pickup truck on Kennisis Lake Road, near Marigold Road, in Dysart. The lone driver, a 28-year-old male from Minden, was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Kennisis Lake Road was closed for several hours, between Marigold Road and Redkenn Road, as members of the OPP’s Traffic Collision Investigation (TCI) team attended the scene to assist with the ongoing investigation.

Between December 12 – December 13, 2024, members of the Haliburton Highlands OPP laid numerous traffic related charges. Officers conducted R.I.D.E. spot checks as well as conducting traffic enforcement with a focus on the “Big Four” which included impaired driving, distracted driving, speeding, and lack of seatbelt use.

The statistics speak for themselves in relation to distracted driving. Seven drivers were charged with driving while on their cellphones. The fine for driving while using a handheld communication device as outlined in the Highway Traffic Act results in a total payable fine of $615 and 3 to 6 demerit points.

While you are driving, including when you are stopped in traffic or at a red light, it is illegal to:

·        Use a phone or other hand-held wireless communication device to text or dial – you can only touch a device to call 911 in an emergency.

·        Use a hand-held electronic entertainment device, such as a tablet or portable gaming console.

·        View display screens unrelated to driving, such as watching a video.

·        Program a GPS device, except by voice commands.

You are allowed to use hands-free wireless communications devices with an earpiece, lapel button or Bluetooth. You can view GPS display screens as long as they are built into your vehicle’s dashboard or securely mounted on the dashboard.

On September 17, 2024, at approximately 7:30 p.m., the Haliburton Highlands officers responded to an assault at a residence on County Road 503 near Gooderham. The suspect fled the scene before police arrived, prompting a large-scale search of the area and an advisory to local residents.

The victim was treated for minor injuries.

On Saturday, September 21, 2024, around 7:30 p.m. the OPP received a tip that the wanted male was hiding at a location on Community Centre Road in Highlands East.

Officers located the male who was taken into custody without incident.

As a result of the investigation and multiple outstanding warrants, Adam McLean, age 40 of Cobourg, has been charged with:

• Assault
• Uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm – two counts
• Failure to comply with an undertaking – five counts

The accused is scheduled to appear for a virtual bail hearing today, Sunday, September 22, 2024.

On September 17, 2024, at approximately 7:30 p.m., the Haliburton Highlands OPP received a report of an assault at a residence on County Road 503. The suspect fled the scene before police arrived.

The victim was transported to the local hospital by Paramedics for minor injuries.
The suspect remains outstanding and is described as a 40-year-old white male, approximately 6 feet tall, with a beard. He was last seen wearing a camouflage sweater, black joggers, a black hat, and carrying a black backpack.

Police do not have reason to believe there is a threat to the public’s safety. However, anyone who may encounter the suspect should not approach. Instead, call 9-1-1 as soon as possible.

There will continue to be heavy police presence in the area of County Road 503 near the Town of Gooderham during the investigation as members of the OPP Haliburton Highlands Detachment continue to search for the suspect, with assistance from the Haliburton Highlands Crime Unit, Emergency Response Team (ERT), and Canine (K9).

To protect the identity of the victim, certain details of this investigation will not be provided.
