The Gravenhurst High School (GHS) Senior Boys Basketball Team was recently recognized for their character, integrity, and respect.

After winning their regional Georgian Bay title for the second year in a row, the team competed at the Ontario Federation of School Athletics Associations (OFSAA) Single A Boys’ Basketball Championships in Timmins, Ontario between March 9 and 11.

Stacking up against other teams from across the province, the Gryphons battled hard and knocked off both the #12 and #14 seeds to advance to the consolation championship game.

Despite not winning, the team was selected for the second year in a row to receive the OFSAA Sportsmanship Award, which is presented to the best team who exemplifies fair play, respect, and camaraderie.

“We are so proud of how our Gryphons represented GHS and Trillium Lakelands District School Board, both on and off the court!” said coach, Gillian Humphries.

“Success on the court is always something to celebrate. But, when our students are recognized for their great character, that is special. It is great to see transferable life skills and meaningful values developed through sport in secondary schools. This award speaks volumes about who our GHS students are and what they represent,” said GHS principal, Trent Willett. “I have been in this school for eight years and know first-hand how respectful, kind, and courteous our students are. It is great to see this recognized at a provincial championship event. Notably, our students are receiving this award for a second consecutive year. It’s simply amazing and worthy of recognition and I am sincerely glad they have received it. I also know that this kind of character doesn’t happen by accident. It takes strong leadership and consistent mentorship to instill these values. So I want to extend a sincere thank you to Coach Humphries, Coach Dickinson, and Coach Tkaczyk – your dedication to modeling and teaching respect, effort, and focus has clearly made a lasting impact. Congratulations players and coaches!”

The OFSAA championships marked the end of the basketball season for the boys, but the team is looking forward to another OFSAA run next season!

Congratulations to the team and coaches–this is well-deserved!

An individual from Southern Ontario has been fined and ordered to pay over $5,700 after unsafe burning practices caused a wildland fire:

Geoffrey Larden of Gravenhurst pleaded guilty to failing to tend a fire under the Forest Fires Prevention Act. He was ordered to pay the Province of Ontario $5,716.82 as partial compensation for the costs incurred to extinguish the fire.

The Ontario Court of Justice heard that on August 4, 2025, a wildland fire was reported adjacent to a cottage located on Gull Lake in the Town of Gravenhurst. No individuals were present at the cottage. Fire crews from the Town of Gravenhurst responded and began suppression efforts until an airborne fire crew from the Ministry of Natural Resources arrived to take over.

The fire was determined to be human-caused, and a subsequent investigation took place. The investigation determined that on July 31, Larden, the cottage owner, had a fire where wood debris was burned on the forest floor and not within a designated fire pit. After burning the debris, Larden poured water on the burned area. Larden then left the property on August 3.

An examination by a forensic investigator with the ministry took place and determined that the fire lit by Larden on July 31 maintained a state of sustained combustion. The weather between July 31 and August 4 was hot and dry, and on August 4, fire weather indices became extreme and favourable for the spread of an out-of-control wildland fire. On this day, the fire grew and threatened nearby cottages in addition to causing a power outage on a portion of the lake. The investigation was supported by eye-witness accounts from residents and cottage owners.

Justice of the Peace Margot M. D. Ballagh heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Bracebridge, on April 1, 2026.

To report a natural resource problem or provide information about an unsolved case, members of the public can call the ministry TIPS line toll free at 1-877-847-7667. You can also call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS. For more information about unsolved cases, please visit ontario.ca/MNRTips.

n June 4, 2026, Explorers’ Edge, the Gravenhurst Chamber of Commerce, and Tourism Gravenhurst hosted stakeholder sessions at Taboo Resort as part of the Experience-Led Tourism Partnership.

The sessions brought together local tourism operators, accommodators, community partners, municipal representatives, and business leaders to explore how Gravenhurst can build stronger bookable experiences, increase visitor spending, support shoulder-season growth, and create new opportunities for collaboration.

Across the sessions, participants shared real-time feedback through Slido, helping identify what local businesses need most, where the greatest tourism opportunities exist, and how this partnership can best support Gravenhurst’s visitor economy.

What We Heard

The response was clear, positive, and action-oriented. Participants expressed strong interest in joining bookable travel packages, receiving ready-to-use marketing tools, accessing better visitor data, and building stronger connections with other businesses.

Key themes included:

Strong interest in bookable Gravenhurst travel packages

A desire for visitor data, insights, and measurable tourism impact

A need for ready-to-go social media content and digital marketing tools

Support for shoulder-season visitation, event-based travel, and longer overnight stays

Interest in business introductions, package examples, and co-creation support

Positive feedback on the open, transparent, and collaborative approach

This feedback confirms that Gravenhurst businesses are not only interested in participating — they are looking for practical tools, clear communication, and support to help move ideas into market-ready visitor experiences.

Presentation Deck

A copy of the presentation deck and session reports have been included below for stakeholders who would like to review the full tourism program overview, including the Explorers’ Edge travel agency model, the Gravenhurst partnership framework, the research approach, and the Well Known Marketing + Advertising workplan.

Explorers’ Edge Welcomes FlixBus to Muskoka and Ontario’s Great Canadian
Wilderness

New service supports affordable visitor access, international travel connections,
and outdoor tourism package development

Explorers’ Edge is pleased to welcome expanded
service with FlixBus, North America’s fastest-growing intercity bus service, to Muskoka
and the wider Great Canadian Wilderness region. The seasonal routes create new
ground transportation connections between Toronto Union Station, Toronto Pearson
International Airport, Gravenhurst, Bracebridge, Huntsville, South River and North Bay,
while also adding Parry Sound Municipal Airport to the existing Sudbury route.
The service launches at an important time for Ontario’s tourism economy. With travellers
increasingly seeking convenient, budget-friendly long-distance transportation options,
FlixBus offers a more affordable, accessible way for visitors to reach rural Ontario
without the expense or complexity of driving.

The schedule is also conducive to real trip planning, allowing travellers to consider day
trips, overnight stays, hotel check-ins, outdoor experiences and regional itineraries that
align with how visitors actually make travel decisions.
The partnership with FlixBus also supports the organization’s emerging Regenerative
Travel Agency model, focused on developing bookable visitor experiences that connect
transportation, accommodations, attractions, outdoor adventure, culture and local
spending.

The opportunity is especially significant for domestic and international travellers arriving
through Toronto and Pearson Airport. Explorers’ Edge will work with regional partners to
develop packages and itineraries that move visitors directly from the bus route into
outdoor experiences, accommodations, downtowns, attractions and communities across
the region.

“Transportation is one of the missing pieces in rural destination development,” said
James Murphy, CEO of Explorers’ Edge. “At a time when affordability matters more
than ever, FlixBus gives us a platform to connect the economics of travel with real,
bookable tourism products. Just as important, the schedule allows visitors to arrive,
check in, explore and build a meaningful itinerary. International travellers already
understand this transportation model. Our job now is to connect the bus directly to the
outdoor experiences, accommodations and communities that make this region so
compelling. We are proud to work with FlixBus, a transportation company whose values
around accessibility, affordability, inclusion, innovation and more sustainable travel align
strongly with our organization.”

The North Bay route includes stops at Fairfield Inn & Suites Gravenhurst, Tru by
Hilton Bracebridge, Holiday Inn Express & Suites Huntsville, Crystal Cave in
South River, and Holiday Inn Express & Suites North Bay by IHG, coordinated in
partnership with Tourism North Bay.
“As demand for affordable travel continues to grow, we’re focused on expanding service
to destinations travelers are actively looking to visit,” said Karina Frayter, head of
communications at Flix North America. “Our partnership with Explorers’ Edge helps
make it easier for visitors to experience Muskoka, Parry Sound, and Northern Ontario
while supporting the communities and tourism businesses that make the region such an
important part of Ontario’s visitor economy.”

“Improved transportation access is critical if we want more visitors to experience the
region in a way that is practical, welcoming and connected,” said Brent Ellerson,
Marketing Manager at Algonquin Outfitters and Vice Chair of Explorers’ Edge. “For
a traveller arriving without a vehicle, or for someone looking for a more affordable way
to explore Ontario, the ability to connect bus service with outdoor experiences,
accommodations and local businesses can make the difference between interest and
action.”

The announcement also aligns with broader provincial tourism priorities. The Tourism
Industry Association of Ontario’s Forward Motion: A Strategic Playbook for Ontario’s
Tourism Industry identifies expanded transportation infrastructure as a key component
of building a more competitive and connected visitor economy.
“Forward Motion makes it clear that transportation is not separate from tourism growth
— it is one of the conditions that enables it,” said Andrew Siegwart, President and
CEO of the Tourism Industry Association of Ontario. “When regions connect
transportation infrastructure with product development, visitor dispersal, workforce
access and local business participation, they are helping bring Ontario’s tourism
strategy to life.”

Explorers’ Edge will continue working with FlixBus, Tourism North Bay, Destination
Marketing Organizations, accommodation partners, municipal partners, Chambers of
Commerce, BIAs, attractions, outfitters and tourism operators to build awareness of the
service and develop packages connected to the route.

Players have the opportunity to practice financial independence in an educational space. This is followed up with a beautiful budgeting workbook that they can take with them throughout the program, and beyond. The supplies for this game were made possible by the Legacy for Alex donations, and its impact has been prevalent. Each participant that stays at Alex’s Place is unique, and we thank the Legacy for Alex for allowing us to meet them where they are at. Giving us this opportunity to individualize support means every youth that walks through the doors is cared for and empowered.”
