The first-ever virtual Gravenhurst Car Show, sponsored by Gravenhurst Canadian Tire, wrapped up last week after giving guests seven days to go online, view the classic automobiles and cast their votes for the best of the best. In the end, the virtual show drew more than 5,100 visitors from around the world, including England, Germany, the USA and Australia.

“We were pretty amazed with the response,” says Chris Hammar, Marketing and Sponsorship Lead with the Gravenhurst Chamber of Commerce, who organizes the event. “Word really spread, especially among various car groups and enthusiasts, and in the end we had more than 200 people submit pictures of their vehicles and more than 2,000 votes cast.”

The winner of the 2020 People’s Choice Award was William Toy of Binbrook, Ontario who showed off his custom 2007 Saturn Sky Redline. The other top ten vote-getters were Len Howe with his 1965 Ford Mustang GT Coupe, Grant Wood with a 1963 Ford Falcon, Dan Lajeunesse with a 1953 Oldsmobile 98, Christie Lawson with a 1996 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am, Brian Bush with a 1997 Ford Mustang, Cory Clarke with a 1956 Pontiac Laurentien, Lawrence Shackleton with a 1932 Ford Roadster, Doug Daniels with a 1965 Ford Mustang and Ken Bowler with a 1935 Ford Cabriolet. Every year donations collected at the Car Show help fund a bursary for a Gravenhurst High School Student going into the automotive field, and this year is no exception. Enough money was donated by virtual car show entrants that organizers can once again offer the bursary.

“You never know how people will take it when you have to change something they love but we’ve had nothing but positive feedback,” says Sandy Lockhart, Executive Director of the Gravenhurst Chamber of Commerce. “We had people going out their way to get donations to us electronically and by phone, people buying Car Show t-shirts online – we were thrilled. It’s also made us more determined than ever to put on a great show in person next year and welcome back everyone we didn’t get to see this year.”

A new approach to the car show experience has been thoroughly embraced by automobile enthusiasts in the Gravenhurst area. With the Car Show officially set to officially launch Wednesday, June 17 at www.gravenhurstcarshow.com, it’s time for the public to pick the best of the best.

This year, Car Show organizers decided that instead of canceling the show they would make the switch to a virtual format. Car owners were asked to submit photos and short descriptions of their antique and classic automobiles, and they responded with gusto.

“We honestly weren’t sure what to expect. This is a big change for us and for the car show crowd, but we’ve been floored with the response,” says Chris Hammar, the marketing and sponsorship lead with the Gravenhurst Chamber of Commerce, who organized the event. “We’ve had more than 200 submissions and we’re pumped to be able to show them off. Now it’s up to the public to pick their favourites.”

Starting at 7 a.m., people can head to the Car Show website and vote for their top picks across several categories. The show is sponsored by Canadian Tire Gravenhurst and car owners compete for the top 10 People’s Choice Awards for a wide range of prizes. That includes the first 100 car owners to register, who will get the chance to win $500 worth of tires from longtime car show sponsor Wayne’s Tire in Gravenhurst.

For the past 26 years, Gull Lake Park in Gravenhurst has played host to one of the biggest and best car shows north of Barrie. The 2020 edition has run into an unexpected curve in the road with COVID-19, but organizers are changing gears to put on a show designed to thrill car lovers from around the virtual world.

Wednesday, May 20, marks the launch of registration for the 2020 Gravenhurst Car Show – Virtual Edition, sponsored by Canadian Tire Gravenhurst. The event will still give car owners the chance to showcase their vintage vehicles while they compete for the top 10 People’s Choice Awards for a wide range of prizes. That includes the first 100 car owners to register, who will get the chance to win $500 worth of tires from longtime car show sponsor Wayne’s Tire in Gravenhurst.

“This is one of the biggest events of the year in Gravenhurst, so it was a difficult decision to move the Car Show to a virtual format,” says Sandy Lockhart, executive director of the Gravenhurst Chamber of Commerce, who organized the event. In the past, the event has drawn up 600 cars and thousands of visitors. “Giving classic car owners the chance to show off all their hard work online is the next best thing to doing it in person.”

Anyone who wants to take part can register their vehicle at gravenhurstcarshow.com between May 20 and June 14. Participants need to take a photo of their car and then include a little bit of information about the vehicle they’re showing off. The vehicles will be posted online at gravenhurstcarshow.com between June 17 and June 24. Voters can go online and vote for their favourites, which will be broken down by era. Those who don’t want to miss their annual car show T-shirt will have an opportunity to purchase one and have it shipped to their home.

“We reached out to some of the major car shows in North America to see how they’ve been adapting, and these virtual car shows have been extremely successful for them,” says Chris Hammar, marketing and sponsorship lead with the Chamber. “We’re also in a very lucky position to have such great sponsors here in Gravenhurst. Many have already stepped up to donate prizes for car owners and it should help make this a lot of fun.”
