“On June 15, we were reminded exactly why Muskoka 100 People Who Care exists,” the group said. “Each presentation was powerful, heartfelt, and a moving reminder of the life-changing work happening right here in our community. There truly wasn’t a dry eye in the room.” 

The three local charities that presented at the meeting were YWCA Muskoka, Carter’s Forever Rescue and Sanctuary, and Enliven Cancer Care. 

The stories shared, the impact demonstrated, and the passion behind each organization made the voting process incredibly difficult. In fact, only three votes separated the winning charity from the others.

Enliven Cancer Care received the highest number of votes for the evening. The charity will receive a significant donation of $9420 to continue supporting individuals and families navigating their cancer journeys.

But the story doesn’t end there. 

One of the founding members of Muskoka 100 People Who Care stepped forward and, together with her husband, offered to match donations for the two remaining charities through The Mochrie Family Foundation.

Because of their incredible kindness, both YWCA Muskoka and Carter’s Forever Rescue and Sanctuary will receive substantial donations to continue their important work throughout the community.

“What began as an evening of connection and learning became something even more meaningful,” the group said. “It became a powerful reminder of what happens when people come together with compassion, generosity, and a shared desire to make a difference.”

“Enliven Cancer Care provides information, a sense of community and a wide variety of programs that enable those living with a cancer diagnosis in Muskoka, their families and caregivers to live engaged and fulfilled lives,” said Carrie Campbell, Chair of the Board of Directors for Enliven Cancer Care.

“All of our programs are provided at no charge, and recently, many of our programs are oversubscribed due to the overwhelming demand in Muskoka. Since we are entirely funded by grants, philanthropy and fundraising events, our ability to offer our programs is entirely dependent on the success of raising funds from the community through events like the Ballroom Blitz.”

The event includes a silent and live art auction, and attendees can expect art works from over 30 local artists, representing various media including oil, watercolour, pottery and weaving.

Proceeds from the event will be invested in programs to support those in Muskoka living with a cancer diagnosis, their caregivers and families.

“We can’t overstate that the need in Muskoka is great. Everyone is impacted by cancer, either personally, through a spouse, child, parent, sibling or friend,” said Campbell.

One way they do so is through the Movement Matters program, which uplifts patients by providing holistic approaches to healing through activities like yoga, dance and exercise classes.

Activities like yoga are beneficial to the body, mind and soul, enabling patients to experience a greater sense of fulfillment while moving their bodies.

Brenda W., a new resident to Muskoka, is a cancer survivor who discovered Enliven Cancer Care as a place where she could receive support and give back to her new community.

“The peer support provided by Enliven’s Soup for the Soul, Nia dance, fitness support, writing for wellness, and art classes have served to anchor me, provide joy and a strong connection to others in this lifelong journey.”
