Let’s Get Huntsville Summer Ready – Earth Week Community Clean-Up Events

The Town is inviting residents to help get Huntsville looking great after a long snowy winter and what has been a messy, rainy spring. Come out and show your community pride by volunteering to help at any of the scheduled town clean-ups happening the week of April 20. Gloves and bags will be provided, now we just need you!

Earth Week Community Clean-up Events:

Monday, April 20: Aspdin Community Hall – meet at front doors, 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Tuesday, April 21: Huntsville Public Library – meet at front doors, 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Wednesday, April 22:

Summit Centre – meet at front doors, 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Muskoka Heritage Place – meet at main gates off Park Drive, 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Thursday, April 23:

Downtown Core (including River Mill Park, Town Docks, King Street, Kent Park, High Street and River Street) – meet at Town Hall front doors on Main Street, 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

- Enjoy a BBQ hosted by the BIA and Rotary Club of Huntsville at 12:00 p.m. following the downtown clean-up!

Utterson Community Hall – meet at front doors, 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Huntsville Fire Hall – meet at front doors, 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Annual Compost Giveaway:

Back by popular demand, the District Municipality of Muskoka is providing high-quality compost through their green bin program. Bring your own pails and scoop up some fresh compost for your garden!

Location: Conroy Park, paved parking lot off Forbes Hill Drive
Availability:  First come, first served

Saturday, June 6: In addition to the above Earth Week events, an additional clean-up day, in partnership with the BIA, will be taking place on Saturday, June 6 from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Come out and help beautify our Downtown Core just in time for summer!

Bala To Join Major National Tree Planting Campaign Kicking Off On Earth Week

With rising temperatures and extreme weather affecting communities across Canada, Trees for Life is launching one of the spring’s largest coordinated urban tree planting efforts to help expand the country’s urban canopy where people live, work and play.

Kicking off during Earth Week (April 19-25), Trees for Life is supporting more than 40 community planting events across seven provinces in partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation, Green Communities Canada, Landscape Ontario, and LEAF, alongside local governments, businesses, foundations and community volunteers. Together, they will plant more than 9,500 trees and 17,250 native plant species.

“Each tree planted is a promise of a greener future – of cleaner air, cooler cities and healthier neighborhoods,” says Mark Cullen, expert gardener and Past Chair, Trees for Life Board of Directors. “Together we can create thriving green spaces in the communities where Canadians live, work, and play.”

Trees for Life and the Arbor Day Foundation will invest more than $160,000 across five urban revitalization projects in British Columbia, Alberta, and Ontario this spring, enhancing flood resiliency, supporting ecological restoration and addressing the urban heat island effect. The collaboration builds on a successful 2025 pilot project with AWS, which added 2,400 new trees across three sites in Calgary and Montreal.

Five thousand trees and 16,000 native plants will take root this year through 24 community initiatives across six provinces, made possible by a joint $350,000 investment from Trees for Life and Green Communities Canada, tripling last year’s pilot program. Select plantings will take place this spring, with additional events slated for the fall.

The Tree Effect: How Healthy Urban Tree Canopies Benefit Communities
Trees deliver powerful benefits, including:

Nature’s Natural “Air Conditioning”: Shade from the urban tree canopy helps combat extreme heat, cooling the air by up to several degrees. It can also reduce air conditioning usage.

Supporting Mental & Physical Health: Trees filter pollutants to improve air quality (key for those with asthma and other respiratory conditions). Plus, time spent in nature reduces stress, lowers blood pressure, improves mood and encourages physical activity.

Climate Action: Experts agree tree planting is one of the most scalable, affordable and effective nature-based solutions to tackle climate change.

Water management: Established trees help prevent shoreline erosion, filter pollutants to protect waterways and absorb stormwater to reduce flooding risks.
Biodiversity: Trees create habitats to support wildlife.

Community Volunteers Make A Big Impact During Earth Week Cleanup

Over two days of dedicated cleanup efforts, local volunteers came together to celebrate Earth Week by making a tangible difference in the environment. Two successful events took place—one at Nelson Head Nature Reserve in Huntsville, and another at Silver Doe Nature
Reserve and Conservation Road in Gravenhurst.

A total of 14 volunteers contributed 42 hours of work, collecting an estimated 30 bags of garbage from these natural spaces and along the roadway. Their commitment to conservation and community pride played a crucial role in keeping Muskoka beautiful.

A special thanks goes to the District of Muskoka’s Clean Muskoka Together program, which
supported these efforts by providing essential cleanup tools like gloves and bags, as well as
exempting disposal fees at the transfer station.

The success of these cleanup events was made possible by our dedicated volunteers. Their efforts remind us that positive environmental change starts with individuals who care and take action. We sincerely appreciate and recognize their hard work in preserving the beauty of our local nature reserves.
