]]>Sadly, 2023 was a historically tragic year on OPP-patrolled roads, with 411 people killed in collisions. The year marked the first time the number of fatalities exceeded 400 since 2007. What has not changed are the behaviours and actions linked to these deaths.

Because these road deaths are linked to poor behaviours and actions, they are irrefutably preventable. Please drive safely and ensure you and your passengers buckle up. By doing so, you are respecting the right of every road user to be safe and, more importantly, helping to save lives.”

During Canada Road Safety Week, the OPP will join police services across the country to collectively target behaviours that place drivers, passengers and other road users at risk.

]]>Canada Road Safety Week (May 16-22, 2023) aims to increase compliance with safe driving measures in order to save lives. Its focus is on behaviours that put drivers, passengers, pedestrians and other vulnerable road users at risk, including the “big four” contributing factors for injury and death on our roads: impaired driving, distracted driving, speed or aggressive driving and lack of seatbelt use.
During Canada Road Safety Week, the following charges were laid in Central Region:
· Speeding – 1,234
· Stunt/racing – 37
· Seatbelt – 79
· Distracted driving – 33
· Impaired – 45
· Careless driving – 23
· Drive while prohibited – 11
· Other charges – 1,072
· Driver’s licence suspensions – 13
Motorists are asked to prioritize safety on our roads by slowing down, driving safely and cautiously, wearing a seatbelt and never driving impaired.

]]>Sadly, the OPP responded to seven road fatalities during the annual initiative, with three of the fatal collisions occurring over the long weekend.
While the results are preliminary, the OPP laid close to 6,900 speeding charges across the province. Aggressive drivers also racked up more than 175 stunt driving/racing charges.
Preliminary charge numbers associated with other road behaviours targeted during the campaign are as follows:
Impaired driving: 245
Distracted driving: 144
Careless driving: 124
No seatbelt: 622 (charges apply to drivers and passengers)
The balance of the offences for which the OPP held drivers to account were the result of other unlawful and unsafe moving violations and driver actions.
The OPP thanks all drivers and other road users who did their part to help keep the motoring public safe during the annual campaign…and do so throughout the year.

]]>Every year, a significant number of road deaths are linked to motorists who decide to drive aggressively, distracted, under the influence of alcohol/drugs or fatigued, with little or no thought about the unimaginable consequences that await them – the loss of human life. The decision to not buckle up is another factor that costs drivers (and passengers) their lives every year.
Leading up to and right through the Victoria Day long weekend, the OPP will join Canadian police partners to target all forms of poor and careless driving, as well as lack of seatbelt use, in an effort to save lives on roads across the country.
The OPP reminds drivers that they are among the greatest contributors to these efforts and that some of the most important decisions of their lives are made every time they Take The Wheel. By making smart, safe decisions during every road trip, drivers and passengers are collaborating with police on making Canada’s roads the safest in the world.

]]>OPP officers maintained a strong presence throughout the weekend as they took part in Canada Road Safety Week. Officers responded to 275 road collisions, many of which were linked to poor, careless driving behaviour.
During the May 21-24, 2021 campaign, the OPP laid 8,477 traffic-related charges and conducted 13,000 traffic stops as part of their efforts to educate the motoring public about safe driving and wearing seat belts.
Aggressive drivers made up the majority of the offenders, with officers issuing 7,177 speeding and 148 stunt driving/racing offence notices.

Distracted driving: 203
Impaired driving: 135
Fail-to-yield: 123
Careless driving: 109
Canada Road Safety Week is led by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP) and supports Canada’s Road Safety Strategy 2025.

]]>Consistent year to year, a significant number of the road deaths so far in 2021 are attributed to driving behaviours that are the focus of this week’s campaign: aggressive, inattentive/distracted and alcohol/drug-impaired drivers, and unbuckled vehicle occupants.
