Muskoka, ON — District Council has approved speed limit changes on three sections of District roads in Bracebridge following an area-wide review of road conditions, traffic speeds, surrounding land uses and safety. 

The changes were approved on August 20, 2026, and will take effect once new speed limit signs are installed. 

The following speed limit changes were approved: 

• Muskoka Road 20 (Doe Lake Road): The speed limit will increase from 60 km/h to 70 km/h between Uffington Road and Housey’s Rapids Road. 
• Muskoka Road 37 (Manitoba Street): The speed limit will decrease from 50 km/h to 40 km/h between Monck Road and Ecclestone Drive. 
• Muskoka Road 42 (Taylor Road): The speed limit will decrease from 50 km/h to 30 km/h between Front Street and Manitoba Street. 

All other speed limits reviewed on District roads in Bracebridge remain unchanged. 

“Speed limits should reflect the road, its surroundings and how people use it,” said James Steele, Commissioner of Engineering and Public Works. “A consistent, evidence-based approach helps drivers, pedestrians and cyclists know what to expect and supports safer travel across Muskoka.” 

A Consistent Approach to Reviewing Speed Limits 

The District manages about 730 kilometres of roads across Muskoka. As communities and traffic patterns change, speed limits need to be reviewed to make sure they remain appropriate. 

The District updated its Speed Limit Policy in 2025 to introduce a regular review process.  All District roads are reviewed over a six-year period, one area municipality at a time. 

In the past, speed limits were often reviewed after a complaint, a municipal request, or a collision. The updated policy ensures that every District road is reviewed regularly, with a consistent approach. 

During each review, staff consider: 

• road design and surrounding conditions; 
• traffic speeds and volumes; 
• nearby homes, businesses and other land uses; 
• collision and safety history; and 
• pedestrian and cycling activity. 

Staff use recognized Canadian transportation engineering guidance, along with local road conditions and safety data, to determine whether a speed limit should increase, decrease or remain the same. 

What Drivers Can Expect 

New speed limit signs will be installed along the three affected sections. The new limits will take effect once the signs are posted.  Drivers should watch for changing speed limits and follow the posted signs. 

The District will continue reviewing speed limits across Muskoka. District roads in the Township of Georgian Bay are currently under review, with recommendations expected to come to Committee in 2027.

Changes are coming to Muskoka Road 118 West between Balls Drive and Westmall Road to improve the current set-up while continuing to support safer travel through the area.

Temporary concrete barriers installed in early 2025 will be replaced with a concrete curb and asphalt median. The updated median will continue to restrict left turns while the District completes long-term planning for the corridor.

Why Left Turns Are Restricted

Between January 2020 and October 2024, there were 29 collisions along this section of Muskoka Road 118W, including one fatal collision.

An engineering review found that left turns and crossing movements at entrances created increased safety risks. In some locations, drivers must cross several lanes of busy traffic to enter or leave properties.

The risks included:

• Drivers crossing up to five lanes of traffic when turning or crossing the road
• Vehicles waiting to turn left and blocking traffic behind them
• Close calls involving vehicles, pedestrians and trucks, particularly during busy summer months

Restricting left turns and directing drivers to nearby traffic signals helps reduce these risks while maintaining access to businesses and properties along the corridor.

Improving the Current Set-Up

Based on community feedback, and now that drivers have adjusted to the new traffic pattern, the temporary barriers will be replaced with a concrete curb and asphalt median.

Additional road markings and signage will be included to make traffic movements clearer.

The new median will remain in place while the District reviews options for the road’s future design and completes the environmental review required by the Province.

Planning for Long-Term Improvements

The preliminary concept and environmental reviews mentioned above will help determine the future design of this section of Muskoka Road 118W.

It will consider:

• Rebuilding the road in a way that continues mitigate risks associated with left turns
• Water, stormwater and sanitary sewer improvements and potential capacity expansion
• Intersection improvements
• Active transportation improvements along the corridor

The future design will continue to prioritize safety while looking for opportunities to improve traffic movement through the area.

On August 10th, 2026, at approximately 10:28 p.m., officers responded to reports of a vehicle being driven in a dangerous manner. Police located the vehicle on Raymond Road in the Town of Bracebridge.

As a result of the investigation, Joshua Wilson, 42-years-old of Huntsville, has been charged with:

·       Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

·       Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs

·       Dangerous operation

·       Having care or control of a motor vehicle with liquor readily available

Wilson was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Bracebridge on Tuesday, September 8th, 2026.

In addition, a 90-day Administrative Driver’s License Suspension (ADLS) and a 7-day vehicle impoundment were imposed.

On Friday, August 7, 2026, at 6:50 p.m., members of the Central Region Traffic Incident Management Enforcement (T.I.M.E.) team were conducting a RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) check in the area of Sparrow Lake Route D and Baseline Road in Gravenhurst when they observed a vehicle make a quick turn away from the RIDE program. Officers located the vehicle and subsequently arrested and charged 41-year-old Robin Mcintee of Gravenhurst with Impaired Operation and Over 80. He will appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Bracebridge on September 15, 2026 to answer to his charges.

On Saturday, August 8, 2026 at 1:50 a.m., Bracebridge OPP officers were conducting general patrol in the town of Bracebridge when they conducted a traffic stop on Manitoba Street to investigate a Highway Traffic Act offence. The investigation soon turned to an impaired and police subsequently arrested and charged 23-year-old Aidan Mabee of Bracebridge, ON with Impaired Operation- Over 80. He will appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Bracebridge on September 8, 2026 to answer to his charge.

On Monday, August 10, 2026, just before 1:00 a.m., Bracebridge OPP officers were conducting proactive patrols in the town of Gravenhurst and conducted a traffic stop after becoming concerned about the driving behaviour of a vehicle on Highway 11 South. Police stopped the vehicle and subsequently arrested and charged 20-year-old Wesley French of Gravenhurst with Impaired Operation, Over 80, Driving a motor vehicle with an open container of liquor and Disobey stop sign. He will appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Bracebridge on September 15, 2026 to answer to his charges.

Impaired driving has a significant impact on the safety of Muskoka roads, if you suspect that someone is driving while impaired by drugs or alcohol, please call police. The immediate consequences for driving while impaired are significant and include a 90-day drivers licence suspension and vehicle impoundment.

On Friday, August 7, 2026 at 10:00 a.m., Bracebridge OPP officers were dispatched to reports of a collision on Wellington Street at Santas Village Road in Bracebridge between an e-scooter and a motor vehicle. The operator of the e-scooter, a 16-year-old from Bracebridge, was transported to hospital with minor injuries and subsequently charged with Careless Driving under the Highway Traffic Act. No other injuries were reported.

Police would like to remind all road users that it is everyone’s responsibility to follow the rules of the road to ensure that everyone reaches their destination safely.

On Friday, August 7, 2026 at 2:45 a.m., Bracebridge OPP officers were conducting general patrol in the town of Bracebridge in the area of Armstrong Street when they came upon two young people attempting to break into a construction vehicle parked in a commercial parking lot. Officers engaged with the young people, one of whom, a 14-year-old Bracebridge youth, was co-operative and able to have a conversation with officers about their conduct. The second, a 16-year-old Bracebridge youth, did not respond well to officers and was subsequently arrested and charged with following offenses:

• Possession of Break In Instruments
• Mischief
• Resist Peace Officer
• Obstruct Peace Officer
• Uttering Threats to Cause Death or Bodily Harm
• Being intoxicated in a public place

He will appear in the Ontario Court of Justice Youth Court in Bracebridge on October 1, 2026 to answer to his charges. The identity of the accused is protected under provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA).

In spring of 2026, Muskoka Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU) investigators commenced an investigation into a suspected illegal marihuana grow site on Little Road in Bracebridge, ON.

On July 16^th, 2026, investigators executed two search warrants in relation to the investigation with the assistance of multiple OPP units and other government agencies, including the Bracebridge Fire Department. Police seized over 4000 cannabis plants and associated equipment, as a result of the investigation, Gang Deng Wang of North York, ON, has been charged with Unlawfully Obtaining Cannabis under the Cannabis Act.

The accused will appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Bracebridge on August 11, 2026 to answer to his charge.
