The Central Region of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is committed to increasing awareness around Off-Road Vehicle (ORV) safety.

Lack of helmet use, alcohol and/or drug consumption, and failure to maintain control of the vehicle remain the leading factors in ORV collisions. With the help of our communities, the OPP hopes to spread the word about ORV safety. Here are some critical safety guidelines and best preparation for enjoyable riding:

Driving an ORV while impaired by alcohol or drugs is as unlawful as driving any other vehicle and carries the same impaired driving penalties that apply to driving a motor vehicle.

Always wear a properly fitted helmet with a secure chin strap. ORV drivers and passengers who do not wear their helmets are at a much higher risk of serious injury or death if they crash, lose control, or their vehicle tips over.

Always carry your registration and proof of insurance.

Ensure proper display of licence plate according to the ORVA.

Have a valid trail pass where applicable.

Exercise caution when riding on permitted roadways, adjusting to the difference between dirt and pavement.

Drive cautiously and familiarize yourself with the required speeds for ORVs.

The Ontario Federation of All Terrain Vehicles is a great resource. Please see the link for more information and safety tips: Tips for the Riders | OFATV – Ontario Federation of All Terrain Vehicle Clubs.

The OPP is responsible for patrolling more than 99,000 kilometres of waterways and trails, and over 130,000 kilometres of roadway throughout Ontario.

The Ontario Federation of All-Terrain Vehicle Clubs (OFATV) today announced a strategic collaboration with Co-operators Insurance, a leading Canadian financial services co-operative. This collaboration highlights the shared commitment of OFATV and Co-operators to safety and education for ATV riders in Ontario.

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) reported a 125% increase in ATV fatalities in 2024. One-third of these deaths involved alcohol and/or drugs, and over half of the victims were not wearing helmets.1

“We are thrilled to collaborate with Co-operators, whose values and focus on community safety align perfectly with our efforts to promote safety awareness among all ATV riders,” said Shari Black, Executive Director of OFATV.

“This collaboration will help us reach more riders and provide them with the necessary tools and knowledge to ride safely. ATV riding is not just a fun activity but is also essential for many individuals who rely on these machines for work and transportation, particularly in rural areas.”

Guy Laurin, Product Owner for Recreational Vehicles at Co-operators, added, “Co-operators is deeply invested in rural communities, supporting small businesses and local growth, which aligns with our broader mission to foster safe and thriving communities. We look forward to working with OFATV to enhance safety education and awareness for all ATV enthusiasts in Ontario.”

Co-operators Insurance provides customers with simplified insurance processes, including special coverage options and discounts, as well as the option to bundle recreational vehicle insurance with home or auto policies for additional savings.

The North-East Region Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Snowmobile, All Terrain Vehicle and Vessel Enforcement (S.A.V.E.) Team noted several concerns during recent patrols.

On July 24 and 25, 2024, S.A.V.E. officers conducted pro-active all terrain vehicle (ATV) patrols on roadways and trails in the Almaguin Highlands region. Some of the concerns noted included an ATV with a 2.5-year-old passenger wearing only a foam bicycle helmet and a side by side with a 2-year-old in a car seat sitting loose not occupying a seat belt position. Further, three ATVs were found to have un-licenced youth operators and four ATVs were towed due to not having insurance.

Common infractions for which officers issued offence notices included:

Drive with passenger under age of 8

Permit Unlicenced person to drive motor vehicle

Drive Non-Passenger ATV with a passenger

Driver with passenger not wearing helmet

ATV operators are encouraged to review the Off Road Vehicles Act and the Highway Traffic Act and be aware of what is required to operate an ATV on the roadway. Always drive sober, wear your helmet and operate in a safe manner.
