The Town of Bracebridge is receiving up to $60,000 from the Ministry for Seniors and Accessibility through the Inclusive Community Grants program to support the addition of an accessible pathway and additional benches at Annie Williams Memorial Park.

The addition of a 550-metre long and 1.5-metre wide barrier-free trail will provide accessible and inclusive access to the park’s waterfront. This addition to the park was identified in the Recreation, Parks and Trails Master Plan as an area of interest and aligns with the Town’s commitment to community wellness and cultural vitality.

The Inclusive Community Grants investment supports priority projects in underserved communities and projects that help communities become more inclusive for people with disabilities. These projects, undertaken by municipalities, Indigenous groups, and community organizations, help strengthen communities by undertaking local needs assessments, developing action plans and implementing initiatives that support inclusivity.

For more information on the Annie Williams Memorial Park accessible upgrades, visit engagebracebridge.ca.

“The Town of Bracebridge is committed to community wellness and cultural vitality. Creating a space that is inclusive and barrier free to all residents and visitors is essential to fostering a thriving community. Annie Williams Memorial Park is a beautiful location to enjoy the outdoors and beauty of the Muskoka River, and it’s important that people of all abilities are able to enjoy this space. Thank you to the province for helping us bring this important addition to the park.”

– Rick Maloney, Mayor, Town of Bracebridge

The Town is seeking community input on accessible upgrades at Annie Williams Memorial Park in Bracebridge.

Based on recommendations from the Recreation, Parks and Trails Master Plan, the Town’s Accessibility Advisory Committee identified the construction of an accessible pathway at Annie Williams Memorial Park as an initiative to complete in 2022. The Town has included the project within the approved 2022 Municipal Budget and Business Plan.

The project involves the construction of a 550-metre long and 1.5-metre wide barrier-free trail at Annie Williams Memorial Park.

The proposed barrier-free trail will provide accessible and inclusive access to the park’s waterfront. Along with the trail, the Town will install benches to give users with mobility or respiratory issues an opportunity to take a rest during their visit. These benches will be made of Muskoka granite stone, with funding coming from third-party donations through the Town’s Commemorative Program and Operating Budget.

“While the scope of the project has been established, we would love to hear from the community about any other ideas to improve accessibility at Annie Williams Park,” said Gillian Mitchell, Parks and Trails Foreperson. “We look forward to seeing this project come to life and creating a more inclusive space in the community.”

Visit EngageBracebridge.ca to share other ideas you may have about accessibility at Annie Williams Park. They will be collecting ideas until Sunday April 10, 2022.

PRISM Theatre In The Park returns to Annie Williams Park in early August, with a plan! Guests and ticket-holders will be treated to an outdoor theatre production, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) written by Adam Long, Daniel Singer, and Jess Winfield, and produced by special arrangement with Broadway Publishing Inc NYC www.broadwayplaypub.com.

A full-on comedy romp performed by three talented local actors, all 37 of Shakespeare’s plays are “prevented” in just under two hours. As one reviewer called it, “Shakespeare written by Reader’s Digest, acted by Monty Python, and performed at the speed of the minute waltz”. Performances are set to take place on the park stage, August 3 – 5 and August 10 – 14, beginning at 7 pm.

As usual, guests will bring their own blankets and lawn chairs to enjoy what is becoming a summer tradition in Muskoka, our Tenth Anniversary Celebration in the Park, and one that event organizers are especially looking forward to this year. Covid-friendly pricing is in effect with Adults $10. Children 12 and under $5.

“We’re looking forward to an entirely safe event, following all Provincial Health and Safety Protocols”, reports Robin Clipsham, one of the organizers. “We intend to adhere to all guidelines, so that everyone can enjoy a safe, fun return to our performances in beautiful Annie Williams Park in August.” Guests will be asked to sign in and are reminded to bring their own water bottles or soft drinks, as refreshments will not be available this year.

Even though things may not look exactly the same, with social distancing seating in effect, the company promises a great show and a warm welcome back to theatre under the stars.
