Swansea Junior and Senior Public School successfully took part in Don’s Bakery’s fundraising program, raising $1,600 through the program around the holidays.
Students at Swansea Junior and Senior Public School ranging from junior kindergarten to Grade 8 sold take-home bakery items throughout November as part of the fundraising. The $1,600 raised will go toward funding school initiatives such as bringing in artists and authors as well as events like welcome back parties. The items sold include frozen cookie dough, ready-to-bake pies and other treats that Don’s Bakery delivered at the end of the fundraiser.
“A parent who was already a big fan saw a Facebook post [from Don’s Bakery] and since we haven’t done a food-related fundraiser in the time I’ve had kids at the school, we thought it was worth a try!” said Jen Shragge, chair of fundraising at Swansea Public School. “We also like to support local businesses whenever possible and liked that this was not a corporate option.”
Bryan Foster, owner of Don’s Bakery, said that Swansea Public School has been wonderful to the bakery and he can’t thank them enough.
“It was an amazing experience for myself personally and Don’s Bakery to be around such passionate people and a wonderful school environment,” Foster said. “They truly care about one another and the school and that is why we created this program in the first place.”
He also added that Shragge was a great organizer and supporter for the program at her school, and the appreciation goes both ways.
“They went above and beyond what I would expect from small business owners,” Shragge said. “Very little work or effort was required on our part, and the selection of goods was quite accommodating for various diets as well.”
