On December 1, six robotic teams from Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB) schools participated in the First Lego League Qualifier Tournament.

The day-long competition is designed to have teams of up to 10 students research real-world programs, to develop a solution using science, technology, engineering, and math concepts (STEM). The teams are also challenged to design, develop, and program a robot to compete on a table-top playing field.

This year’s challenge was a research project called, “Into Orbit”, where teams had to consider a physical or social problem faced by humans in space exploration. They then presented their idea to an expert. Huntsville Public School’s team presented to a Nasa astronaut, who gave them feedback on their strategy.

RHX 37667, a team of Grade 4 o 6 students from Rolling Hills Public School were the tournament champions, qualifying for the Ontario Championship taking place in February, 2019.

Over 10 teams, made up of students from Grades 4 to 8, participated in the the First League Qualifier Tournament, which would not be of been possible without the support of TLDSB and Parry Sound Muskoka Community Network.
