The Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH) plans to double in size through the redevelopment of the Georgian Drive health centre and the introduction of a new south campus in Innisfil or south Barrie, according to an announcement from the hospital on April 18.
Technical experts in RVH’s planning exercise, which launched over a year ago, determined that the current facility needs to double in size to meet the needs of the Barrie-area’s expanding population. The exercise is ongoing and includes planning for redevelopment of the Georgian Drive health centre, also known as the north campus, in addition to a new south campus in Innisfil or south Barrie. The hospital has consulted with staff, physicians, patients, families and residents over the past year and the consultation has allowed architects to create several options for redevelopment, which include construction of an inpatient tower on the current 40-acre site. RVH is seeking resident input on the expansion of the north campus and will submit a Master Plan for the expansion to the government for consideration in late-2019.
“We know projections suggest the population of Barrie, Innisfil and Springwater will double by 2041 with over 170,000 new residents,” said RVH president and CEO Janice Skot. “To keep pace with that growth, another building needs to be added to the north campus. Most of that expansion needs to happen within the next five years.”
The Site Selection Committee is also working to locate a site for the south campus. The committee originally narrowed its search from over 225 square-kilometres to 47 sites and has now refined the list to nine potential sites. Expert consultants will continue their analysis to develop a short-list of sites for the hospital’s Board of Directors to consider, according to the announcement.
The hospital is pursuing a graduated plan for the south campus. The plan includes an ambulatory care health hub within ten years and a full-service, 500,000 square-foot hospital with an emergency department and inpatient beds in 20 years.
