Kaylee Kelly, a Grade 10 student at Huntsville High School, has been elected as the new student trustee for the Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB), according to a news release from the TLDSB on April 30.
The announcement was made on April 26 after the G7 Student Leadership conference, in which just under 100 high school students from seven high schools attended Kinark Outdoor Centre to learn about student leadership. Kelly was one of three students to give a speech about why they would be best suited for the role of student trustee. Kelly said students have the power to lead and the ability to make a positive change if they all work together in her winning speech. Along with the student speeches, several teachers within the board spoke on leadership throughout the day and the event included activities that incorporated team work, discussion and leadership.
Kelly’s student trustee role will require her to attend Ontario Student Trustee Association meetings in addition to bringing issues and accomplishments from each TLDSB secondary school to board meetings. Kelly takes over for outgoing student trustee Chloe Samson.
