The Town of Bracebridge is collecting donations for flood recovery efforts while notifying residents that waters are starting to recede despite water levels that remain higher than normal, according to a news release from the town on May 3.
The north branch of the Muskoka River continues to recede as outflows from the Huntsville and Algonquin area have reduced. Noticeable improvements along the North Branch Muskoka River through Bracebridge have been observed, but water levels still remain higher than normal for this time of year. The South Branch Muskoka River is starting to recede as outflows from Baysville and Algonquin areas are reducing. Water levels in the Muskoka River below the Bracebridge Falls are stable and are expected to recede as flows from the upstream river branches reduce. Residents affected by flooding are reminded to check in and update 211 on their situation. Organizations and individuals interested in making a financial donation to flood recovery efforts can do so in person at the Town of Bracebridge Offices located at 1000 Taylor Court during regular business hours. Online donation services will be made available soon and donation through the Town of Bracebridge will ensure that all funds remain local and are distributed to those households impacted in Bracebridge, according to the release.
The town has partnered with the Canadian Red Cross to provide registration services for individuals in need of financial assistance with flood related costs. Registration with the Canadian Red Cross will provide access to the Ontario Flood Appeal as well as local fundraising. To register, call the Canadian Red Cross toll free at 1-800-863-6582.
While the flood emergency is ongoing in some areas, other areas are beginning recovery and clean-up efforts, so the town and the district have developed a voucher program for solid waste disposal. Further information about the program will be announced today, according to the release. (Update: Read about the program here)
Staff in the Building Services Branch will be inspecting properties that have been affected by flooding by request. Contact 705-645-6319 ext. 236 and leave a message with your property address, nature of your issue (septic or structure) and when someone would be available on site to meet staff once the water has receded.
