South Muskoka Bears U18 Win Thriller Christmas Classic Tournament In Lefroy

By: Katie Peleikis

The U18-Hall Construction Bears traveled to Lefroy last weekend to participate in their first tournament of the season.

Game one was againt the Oak Ridges Kings with the Bears scoring first with a goal by Michael Collett from Alex Clayton and Hannah Dash.  Kale Rogers scored two goals in the second period with assists from Landen Barron, Hannah Dash and Euan Greenfield. For extra insurance Mitchell Hammond scored in the third period. Isaac Downey was stellar between the pipes shutting down everything that Oak Ridges could throw at him earning a well deserved shutout.

Our second game was against the Richmond Royals where the Bears scored first with a goal in the second period from Kale Rogers from Evan Soja and Michael Collett. The third period didn’t go so well with two goals from Richmond and a 2-1 loss.

For game three, we knew we needed a win if we wanted to play on Sunday. The pucks were bouncing our way with Kale Rogers burying multiple rebounds with assists from Michael Collett, Evan Soja and Brock Fry to go up 6-0 early in the second period.  In the third period, Landen Barron scored with assists from Jackson Ferguson and Euan Greenfield and Alex Clayton buried one from Brock Fry.  That was more than enough for a strong 8-2 win.

We ended up in third place after the round robin play which pitted us against the undefeated Dresden Maroon. Euan Greenfield started the scoring off with an unassisted goal in the first period. Dresden tied it 1-1 at the end of the first. Midway through the second period Landen got a key go-ahead goal from Everett Brown. The third period was all Bears with goals from Michael Collett, Brock Fry and Owen McCutcheon. That was good enough to get a 5-1 win and entry into the Finals.

The final game was against the Thorold Blackhawks, a tough undefeated team. The game did not start off as planned with the Bears being down 2-0 halfway through the first period. The Bears didn’t give up with Landen getting our first goal from Jace Chambers and Owen McCutcheon. Kale Rogers scored off the face off to tie the game at 2-2 after the first period. Brock Fry got the go-ahead goal from a nice pass from Alex Clayton. Thorold fought back hard with two goals to go ahead 4-3.  Late in the second period Michael Collett sniped a rocket from Kale to tie the game at 4-4. Isaac made some very big saves in the third period including a break away, keeping the game close. Late in the third period Landen Barron had an amazing penalty kill where he beat the other team on a 1-1 and came in on a breakaway to score a huge go-ahead goal with just two minutes left in the game. Thorold, not giving up, pulled their goalie and tied the game with 47 seconds to go. The Bears fought hard in the dying seconds of the game drawing two penalties on Thorold. With two players in the penalty box we had a two man advantage for the start of the overtime. Brock Fry got the tournament winner from a perfect pass from Landen Barron to declare the Hall Construction Bears the tournament champions!!!!!  Way to go Bears!
Thanks to all the players and fans that came out to support a great weekend of hockey!
