On Monday afternoon, an Oro-Medonte resident lost control of a small open-air fire. The ensuing blaze consumed over 25 acres of land by Ridge Road and Line 10, according to officials.
Oro-Medonte Fire and Emergency Services responded to the call at 2:03 p.m. and were on-site for 4.5 hours extinguishing the fire and dealing with hot spots.
The resident’s neighbour called for assistance after a small pile of brush the resident was burning quickly escalated due to high winds and dry conditions.
No injuries or building damage was reported.
“The Township has an established Open Air Burning By-law in place which under the environmental/weather conditions on April 10th did not permit burning with a windspeed of 24km/h,” said Communications & Public Relations Officer Jenny Legget in an email to Muskoka411.
The by-law prohibits open-air fires when winds exceed 16km/h.
