On behalf of the Orillia Police Services Board, the City of Orillia is encouraging residents to show their support and appreciation for their neighbourhood school crossing guards during School Crossing Guard Appreciation Day on Wednesday, March 23, 2022.
“We are fortunate to have such a dedicated and community minded group of crossing guards in Orillia. Thank you to those who have stepped up to the plate to fill recent vacancies,” said Mayor Steve Clarke, Chair of the Orillia Police Services Board. “Crossing guards play a vital role in ensuring safety at school crossings. Take a moment on March 23 to show appreciation to your neighbourhood school crossing guard. Through rain, snow, heat, and beyond they are devoted to creating safe routes to school and work.”
This is the fourth year that School Crossing Guard Appreciation Day is being held province-wide, coordinated by the Ontario Traffic Council. Communities all across the province will be celebrating and recognizing their school crossing guards on this day.
“During the pandemic, crossing guard positions were more difficult to fill and crossing guards faced employment disruptions when the schools were closed. Now the team is back to full strength with all crossings covered,” said Nancy Wilding, School Crossing Guard Supervisor. “Help us recognize these diligent individuals whose assistance helps young residents with their active and safe daily travel to and from school.”
Support your local school crossing guards by following these guidelines:

- Guard signals you to stop; all cyclists and drivers must stop.
- Understand and follow the posted speed limits, especially in school zones.
- Always check before turning at intersections.
- Remain stopped until all pedestrians and guard have cleared the crossing. It is the law.
- Do not drop students off in NO stopping and NO parking zones.
