The Muskoka Lawn Bowling Club has received a Community Better Challenge grant of $550 from ParticipACTION, according to an announcement from the club on April 7.

The grant is part of the Community Better physical activity challenge presented by the non-profit organization ParticipACTION, which encourages Canadians to be more active. The funds will go toward Learn to Lawn Bowl programs that aim to help people do more physical activity and try out the sport of lawn bowling. The programs will be offered at the Muskoka Lawn Bowling Club located on the grounds of the Muskoka Highlands Golf Links in Bracebridge and they cost $60, which will be deducted from the annual membership fee when participants join the club. Each program includes four two-hour classes (see dates below).

The Muskoka Lawn Bowling Club’s third outdoor season is tentatively scheduled to start May 13. The club hopes to introduce more people to the “gentle, social sport” during the spring and summer, according to the announcement.

“Muskoka Lawn Bowling Club has made a positive contribution to the social fabric of our community and offered a new way for people to remain physically active,” said Parry Sound-Muskoka MPP Norm Miller.

The club offered indoor “short mat” indoor bowls for the first time this past winter after partnering with the Town of Bracebridge Recreation Department. The indoor bowls were held at the auditorium in the Bracebridge Memorial Arena.

For those who want to learn more about lawn bowling and the club before the Learn to Lawn Bowl programs begin, there are two upcoming free events:

  • A Registration & Spring Meeting in the clubhouse to discuss highlights of the upcoming season from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on May 7.
  • An Open House to give everyone a chance to try lawn bowling from 1 to 4 p.m. on May 25.

Programs will run on:

  • Mondays and Wednesdays at 10 a.m. or 6:30 p.m. from May 27 through June 5.
  • Tuesdays and Thursdays at 1:30 p.m. from May 28 to June 6.
