Parry Sound-Muskoka MPP Norm Miller voiced his approval of the Ontario Government’s appointment of David Lindsay to act as special advisor on recycling and plastic waste in a statement on June 12.
Miller has advocated for recycling, reducing plastic waste and holding the companies that produce waste responsible throughout his career. He has introduced a number of Private Members Bills designed to reduce waste and hold producers responsible since 2003, including the LCBO Deposit and Return Act introduced in 2004 and the Reducing Waste One Pod at a Time Act introduced in 2017.
“I have a long track record of putting forward ideas to help protect our environment,” Miller said. “Fourteen years ago I tabled a Private Members Bill to make producers responsible for the waste created by their products and packaging. While the McGuinty government passed legislation that claimed to do that, it hasn’t been successful so we need to do something about it now.”
Ontario’s waste diversion rates have been stalled at 30 per cent for 15 years, according to the statement, meaning 70 per cent of our waste continues to go to landfill.
“I have faith that David Lindsay will work with Minister of Environment, Conservation and Parks Rod Phillips to find a solution that will really hold producers responsible for the waste they create,” Miller said.
