Owners of the Gravenhurst and Orillia Harvey’s locations are coming together to fundraise for a local girl who was recently diagnosed with leukemia.

Two-year-old Alyssa Snoddon was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in August. Her parents, Shawn and Roberta, found out two weeks ago that she has a rare form of the disease known as hypodiploid ALL, which requires intensive treatment that has a higher risk of damaging her heart. Alyssa is undergoing chemotherapy and treatments are expected to continue for a minimum of a year and a half to two years. To help cover costs while Roberta is away from work to take care of Alyssa, the Harvey’s locations are joining a number of local businesses and individuals to fundraise for the family.

Orillia franchise owner Laura Dickson learned about Alyssa’s diagnosis through an acquaintance with a close connection to the family.

“Upon hearing the details of Alyssa’s struggles, and hearing that the family was doing a charity softball tournament, I wanted to help out,” Dickson said. “I reached out to Arvin Gulati, the franchisee in Gravenhurst, who had a connection to the family through his own sports activities in town.”

Both Harvey’s locations are accepting donations through the sale of paper hearts and will be on site at the charity baseball tournament on Sept. 28, selling hamburgers, hot dogs, and soft drinks. All the food and drink is being donated by the Orillia and Gravenhurst Harvey’s locations and the money collected will go directly to the family.

“We are grateful and privileged to have the opportunity to support Alyssa and her family through this difficult time,” said Dickson and Gulati. “We feel strongly in giving back to our communities whenever we possibly can. We have great associates who believe in strong community ties and understand the importance of supporting great causes, so it was an easy decision to get involved.”

If you want to support Alyssa and her family, visit Harvey’s at 1215 Muskoka Road South in Gravenhurst or 370 Memorial Avenue in Orillia, or attend the charity baseball tournament at Peake Fields in Bracebridge this Saturday. You can also contribute to Alyssa’s journey by donating to her GoFundMe campaign.
