Georgian College has officially reached 100,000 graduates, marking the significant milestone in its 56-year history during several convocation ceremonies Oct. 23 and 24.
“Reaching 100,000 alumni is a momentous occasion for Georgian, one demonstrating an ongoing demand for the innovative and highly relevant educational experience we offer our students,” said Kevin Weaver, President and CEO, Georgian College. “Since 1967 and that first cohort of 101 students, thousands of alumni have taken to the world stage, transforming workplaces and communities as innovators and changemakers. As the alumni community grows with each passing year and every new convocation, so will Georgian’s undeniable impact.”
At this year’s convocation, 1,330 students crossed the stage, graduating from seven campuses and 130+ programs. During the ceremony, they heard from Jon Montgomery, Canadian Olympian, Georgian alumnus (Canadian Automotive Institute class of 2000) and Amazing Race Canada host, who encouraged grads to follow their paths and be true to themselves.
100,000 individual stories of impact
As Georgian celebrates the collective contributions of its growing alumni community, the college is also marking this occasion by sharing their graduates’ many inspiring stories and unique journeys to success.
“Just like each and every Georgian grad, 100,000 is more than a number,” said Hilary Anderson, Chair, Alumni Association Executive Council and alumna of the Business Administration – Accounting program (class of 1991). “It represents the countless personal and professional dreams Georgian has helped realize and the many incredible stories in which the college has played a role. No matter what program they completed or when, every single grad adds to the potential and impact of our alumni family.”
With a diverse community of students hailing from 86 different countries and chasing countless career paths, 100,000 is just one of many numbers that can be used to showcase the remarkable journeys of Georgian alumni. Behind each number is a story of achievement, perseverance and inspiration – whether using “43” to represent the age of a mature student when they graduated into a second career, “30” for the number of years an alumnus has found long-term success in their chosen field, or even “one” for a student who was the first generation in their family to graduate with postsecondary education.
To celebrate the 100,000 alumni milestone, the Georgian Alumni Association will share stories behind the numbers throughout November on social media and in the end-of-the-year digital issue of GeorgianView magazine for alumni, donors and friends of Georgian.
