Eleven people lost their lives in a tragic Thanksgiving long weekend across Ontario, with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) reporting seven vehicle occupants, one pedestrian, and three off-road vehicle riders among the fatalities, according to an OPP press release.

The deaths occurred as the OPP wrapped up “Operation Impact,” an annual road safety campaign aimed at reducing traffic fatalities. Despite these efforts, officers were confronted with widespread dangerous driving, issuing 8,870 traffic-related charges over the four-day period from October 11 to 14.

Aggressive driving was a major concern, with 4,902 speeding tickets and 133 stunt/racing charges issued. Seatbelt violations accounted for 388 fines, while impaired driving led to 163 criminal charges. Distracted driving also remained an issue, with 85 fines handed out.

The OPP’s Operation Impact is part of a national effort to support Canada’s Road Safety Strategy 2025, reminding motorists that adherence to traffic laws can prevent needless tragedies on the roads.
