The damage is estimated at $200,000 after a fire destroyed a main cottage and bunkie on Gibson Lake during the afternoon on June 8, according to the Muskoka Lakes Fire Department.
The Township of Muskoka Lakes Fire Department responded to 1212 Wahta Rd #2 in the Wahta Territory for a fully involved structure fire at about 1:30 p.m. on June 8. The occupants of the cottage were home at the time when they noticed flames and called 911. Upon arrival, the structure was fully involved and fire was spreading through the forest area towards neighbouring cottages. Through the combined efforts of neighbours with their own portable water pumps and crews from Stations 1, 3 and 4 with their equipment, the fire was quickly contained and efforts were then focused on the remains of the structure. It was later learned that a main cottage and a bunkie beside it had both been consumed by the fire. The cause of the fire is still under investigation but is not believed to suspicious and there were no injuries.
The Township of Muskoka Lakes Fire Department wants to thank the neighbouring residents in the area for their quick action in slowing down the fire from reaching a neighbouring cottage prior to the arrival of the fire department.
