City Of Orillia Pauses Installation Of New Parking Spaces For Safety Review

The City of Orillia has paused the installation of 17 new parking spaces on Colborne Street in the downtown Orillia area as part of an ongoing review to ensure the safety and accessibility of our streets. The decision comes after careful consideration of recent traffic incidents and input from residents.

“We are committed to prioritizing the safety of all road users,” said Mayor Don McIsaac. “As part of this process, we want to take additional time to review traffic conditions and ensure that any changes we implement are in the best interest of the community.”

In May 2024, Council approved the creation of an additional 22 paid on-street parking spaces in the downtown Orillia area, including 17 spaces on Colborne Street, and other spaces on Matchedash Street, Peter Street North, and Andrew Street South, plus one accessible space in Municipal Parking Lot #2 at 56 Colborne St. E.

Preliminary installation work, including line painting, began for the new parking spaces this week. However, given the importance of maintaining safe road conditions—particularly at key intersections—the City has decided to halt further installation of the 17 parking spaces on Colborne Street and remove the recently painted lines while we evaluate potential impacts on traffic flow and safety.

The installation of additional parking spaces on Matchedash Street, Peter Street North, Andrew Street South, and Municipal Parking Lot #2 will continue as planned.

We appreciate the public’s understanding and patience as we work to ensure that any additional parking space installations are carried out with safety as the top priority.
