On Sunday, June 2 more than 190 participants biked to raise $168,295 for Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital (OSMH) Foundation in the 2nd annual Soldiers’ Ride.
The rain did not dampen any spirits or deter riders from cycling in either the 20 kilometre, 50 kilometre or 100 kilometre routes through scenic landscapes of North Simcoe and Muskoka.
Once again, the ride started and finished at Quayle’s Brewery. Cyclists enjoyed the refreshments at three scenic pit stops, especially the homemade butter tarts, with commemorative jerseys, t-shirts, and specialty socks to take away.
“It was smiles all around,” said Lawre Pietras, Soldiers’ Ride Committee Chair and OSMH Board of Directors first Vice Chair. “There was great energy from all the riders.”
Funds raised from this year’s Soldiers’ Ride will support areas of greatest need for OSMH. This is significant to ensuring the hospital has access to upgraded equipment, enhanced care spaces, and advancements where they are needed most.
The success of the Soldiers’ Ride is attributed to the generous support of volunteers, sponsors, and participants whose commitment to fundraising was exceptional.
This year’s top fundraising team, Black Swamp Gang, raised over $17,900. Their team also had the top individual fundraiser, raising $7,340. Black Swamp Gang’s team captain, Dr. Tom Lobsinger, has a personal connection to the hospital. Aside from being a passionate cyclist, Dr. Lobsinger worked as a physician in Orillia for over 36 years.
“This fundraiser is close to my heart. Having worked in so many areas of the Hospital, I know that Soldiers’ has a wonderful team to work with,” said Dr. Lobsinger. “My (cycling) team felt the same way.”
The 2nd annual Soldiers’ Ride cycling event surpassed expectations and the momentum behind the event continues to grow.
“We are blown away by the support of our community,” said Heather Saba, Senior Annual Giving Officer at OSMH Foundation. “It is amazing to see so many people connect to this event. The riders, sponsors and volunteers have gone above and beyond to show their support for our hospital and their care for the health and wellbeing of their communities.”
